It's hard to believe that there are now 6 coaches in the NHL that have been with their teams less than Keefe has with Toronto. Ranked 25th in tenure with current team. By 20-21 season he could be top 10.

My take on this is that the GM is some combination of not that smart, is connected to the new coach, or has a personal issue with Gallant.

Will be interesting to see what they do with the All-Star coaching gig. It shouldn't be DeBoer, as his coaching didn't merit it. If it was up to me, I'd still have it be Gallant.

Or he wasn't the guy who picked Gallant in the first place, so he's itching to pick his own guy.

I realize that, but in this case, I'd put that under a combination of my first and third points. The personal issue is "I didn't hire him", and the not that smart is "I think we can easily get a better coach in here, like DeBoer"

When you have a guy who is a good coach, you cannot be guaranteed you're improving on that by hiring a guy without a great record, and DeBoer doesn't have a great track record - it's arguably worse than Gallant's. Less division titles, no Coach of the Year award. More Cup Finals, but in more seasons.

Vegas were exceeding expectations as much as humanly possible. Lot of depth guys which help make that team but not a whole lot of top end guys. Gallant coached according to the cards that he was dealt and why they were a 4 line juggernaut.


...massive head scratcher. I don’t see how anyone does a better job than what he did.

Since 27 November, there have been 7 Head Coaching changes. Detroit has 5 wins since that same date and still has the same Head Coach.
