I wonder if we start seeing more players negotiate without an agent so they can cut out the agent slice of the pie and split it themselves.

Broduer apparently only hired a lawyer when negotiating a contract to read it over once he ironed out the details. So he didn't have an agent, and the lawyer was paid less than an agent would be.

A player with the status that Backstrom, Ovi, Brodeur, Crosby, Malkin and what not with their organizations really don't need an agent I'd say. They've been around the organization long enough where they really shouldn't be effed over and they know their worth.

It makes sense if he's not hitting the UFA market. If he planned on switching teams it makes sense to have an agent for all of the talking that takes place under the table before July 1st.

NMC the first 3yrs, M-NTC the final 2 yrs. 15 team No trade list.

He even has a heavy signing bonus structure on the deal. Each yr his total salary is 50/50 split between signing bonus and base salary, except the last yr, where it's a 6mill signing bonus, 2mill salary.

    UFA/RFA for the Caps:
    Djoos (buried) - RFA
    Siengenthaler - RFA
    Boyd - RFA
    Leipsic - RFA
    Gudas - UFA
    Holtby - UFA

10.834166mill coming off the books for the next season.
Their cap total is 71.105mill, the cap ceiling will be roughly 82-83mill likely?

    11-12mill to fill:
    Goalie, 2defense, 1-2Forwards.

Holtby isn't out, but he's def not a lock. It's up to him if he wants to stay, or get paid. They also have to think about Ovi. He's making 9.5mill and is a UFA in July 2021. So he's def going to re-sign, but maybe he signs at a low number.

I think his play the last couple of years and the play of Samsonov this year is doing more to push Holtby out than Backstrom's contract.

Seems like a fair deal for both team and player. The cap hit may be a touch high in the final year but that's fair given it's only a 5 year deal.

Caps know exactly what they are getting and keep a core player in place for the remaining window of Ovy's prime (elite? above average?) years.

I would be really interested to know if Backstrom has an agent generally and how said agent feels about being left out of the payday after potentially years of work.

This article kind of touches on the subject. I remember Healy ripping Ovi for negotiating his contract because he has close ties to a lot of NHL agents / the NHLPA does as well. So I know the NHLPA does not like when players rep themselves

Ovie and Backstrom well on their way to one of the top duos in NHL history.....if they're not already at the top.
