Are we counting compliance buyouts?
Bryz, Lecavailer, Richards, Ehrhoff, Leino, Grabrovski are still getting paid by their original teams
So I was bored this morning at work and was looking at CapFriendly for something when I noticed an intersting name still on Arizona Coyotes payroll. Mike Ribeiro is still under contract and getting paid this year to the tune of $1.944M.
This got me thinking, I wonder what other weird names I will find still getting paid so away I went.
Cody Hodgson is still on Buffalo's payroll for three more years after this one, making $792K
Troy Brouwer is making $750k this year from St Louis, but Calgary is on the hook for this year, and two more after, at $1.5M
The Canucks are still paying Luongo and his "my contract sucks" $3.033M for this year and two more. He's also getting $1.094M this year and two more from the Panthers for something called a Recapture Penalty. I'll have to google the technical explanation on this penalty.
Andrej Sekera is making $1.5M base salary from Dallas (Bonuses could bump it to $2M) but the Oilers are still paying him $2.5M for the next three years after this one ends.
Alexander Semin is still getting $2.33M from the Hurricanes this year and next.
Tyler Ennis is still making $1.21M from the Wild, while earning $800K in Ottawa.
Matt Carle is still getting $1.833M from the Bolts
Stephen Weiss is still making $1.67M this year and next from the Wings
The Rangers have a couple doozies on their books. Dan Girardi is making $3.61M this year, but it drops to $1.11M the year after that for two years. Kevin Shattenkirk is getting $1.483M this year, next year it jumps to $6.08M, then back down to $1.483 for two more after that.
The Ducks are feeding Corey Perry for three more years after this season. This year, he's getting $2.625M, next year it jumps to $6.625M, then back down to $2M for a couple more years.
Mike Cammalleri is still getting $1.667M from the Devils this year and next.
Steve Mason is still getting $1.33M from the Habs
The LA Kings are paying Dion Phaneuf $2.188M this year, $4.063M next year, then $1.063M for two more after that. Mike Richards is tasty too. He getting roughly $1.6M this year, but he's still on the books for another six years getting anywhere from $700k - $900K, depending on the year.
Oh, and Dion Phaneuf is also getting $730K this year from the Sens, $1.35M next year and then back down to $354k for two more from the Sens. Well done Dion!
There was a few other names in there but nothing I wanted to get in to. That's a lot of money going out to not play hockey anymore. Comical to say the least.
Enjoy your friday!

Rick DiPietro will be paid $1.5M every year until 2029
I was just going through capfriendly and seeing the buyout names.; not the compiance buyout ones that dont count against the caps anymore. None the less:
Grabovski is still getting $1.791M for this year and next by Toronto.
Bryzgalov is getting $1.642M from the Flyers for eight more years. Yikes!
Vinnie Lecavelier is getting $1.761M for eight more years from TB. Yikes as well!
Brad Richards is getting $1.055M from the Rangers for seven years!
Ehrhoff is getting $857K from Buffalo for eight more years AFTER this one!
Ville Leino is getting $1.22M this year from Buffalo.
My favorite buyout of all time which you forgot to include, and I was wondering why I didnt see him there, is easily Rick DiPietro, who's still getting $1.5M for nine more years after this season ends.

Never underestimate the silly things that NHL GMs will do. Remember how flabbergasted Leafs fans were when Lou somehow managed to trade Phaneuf without retaining salary? That, alone, should have made him GM of the year that season. And then Ottawa managed to trade him too. Remarkable.
I honestly just assumed DiPietro was a no brainer lol. But you always forget how long the buyout effects the organization.
His normal deal, signed back in 2006-07, the year when the scoring leaders were Crosby, Thornton, Lecavailer, would be in his second last yr.

Kind of like the Darwin Awards for NHL Coaches, GM's and Owners. I believe it's being hosted again this year by Mike Milbury (:

Not NHL, but Bobby Bonilla is the most famous case of this. The Mets pay him $1.2M every year until 2035 and have been doing so since 2001 when he retired.

And it's because the Mets got roped into Bernie Madoff's scam and were convinced that paying Bonilla's $5.9M salary with an 8% interest rate over 20+ years was a good investment soley because if they invested that money witrh Madoff it would return at least 10%+.
Bernie Madoff, Bobby Bonilla and Money Now vs. Money Later
The Mets have never really talked about the deal, but it is well known that their owners, the Wilpons, had many accounts with investor Bernie Madoff. Madoff was returning 12 to 15 percent a year in what we now know were fictional returns. So deferring deals wasn’t a problem because the payout would occur years later and the interest rate would be lower than the money they were (fictionally) getting back from Madoff.
To see the deal as the Mets would have seen it, let’s say the Wilpons put $5.9 million into a Madoff account in 2000 and got a conservative (by Madoff standards) 10 percent annual return. By 2011, when they would have to pay Bonilla for the first time, they would have already grown their pot to $16.83 million. Even with paying off Bonilla every year, they would wind up with a $49 million profit on the deal. Of course, the Madoff returns weren’t real, which complicates this hindsight.
Very interesting research Axeman!
