It should have been a penalty. Once the puck left the playing area over the glass, which it did, it doesn’t matter where it comes down or who catches it or any of it. The refs got it wrong and the Canadian coach didn’t actually do anything to negate a penalty. Perhaps he helped fool the refs into making the wrong call - certainly wasn’t intentional - but that’s it.

It's only a penalty if it goes over the glass behind the players bench. That does not appear to have happened. So it's not a penalty. The coach may have prevented it from going over the glass behind him, but again, no rule against that. It's simply not a penalty based on the rule book.

Good grief, what a bad 1st period for Canada against Russia. Some weird plays leading to goals but ultimately outplayed and disordered.

Ice was definitely tilted into Canadas end. Russia playing desperate hockey, not wanting to go 0-2 to start the tourney. They definitely want it more than Canada right now. Canada needs the next one badly.

A real bad day for the Canadian Juniors, a 6 - 0 thumping at the hands of the Soviets and they likely lose their best forward to injury in the process. Ouch. This is the worst defeat in modern tournament history for the Canadians. However, there is always hope, check this out:

In 1976, Canada was represented by the Sherbrooke Castors, champions of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League a year earlier. The format was simple: a five-team round-robin tournament. Canada opened with a win over Finland. Two days later the country suffered what is still its worst defeat ever, a 17-1 loss at the hands of Sweden in which it was outshot 79-14. Canada rebounded to beat the Czech Republic, but it fell in its finale to the Soviet Union. The Canadians and the Czechs finished with identical 2-2 records, but Canada’s win in the head-to-head match-up gave it the tiebreaker, and with it, the silver medal.

So, shake it off, move on, a medal is still absolutely achievable!

Best time to loose (if you had to loose a game) is in the round robin. I don't think anyone expected Canada to go undefeated this year.
