    Asking for a friend...

Who do you think should be the captains for the WJC Hockey Pool? :P
And would you consider adding 3 D and a G to the captain's list since D tend to be the same 4 across the board? Or just leave things as they are?

(I'll try sorting through rosters and prepare things between now and Tuesday. I've just been busy and finally getting time off for the first time in a while and trying to enjoy it more before setting the pool up).

Are you saying that in the captain's slot you could pick a defenseman or goalie who wouldn't be available elsewhere?

    *

I think we have just enough variety in the goalies because of how people manage their 5 per nation that a goalie captain is not necessary.

I would be pro turning one of the defenseman slots into a "D captain" to make it a bit more challenging.

    In terms of captains:

    Canada - Lafreniere, Hayton, Veleno
    Russia - Denisenko
    Finland - Kupari
    Sweden - Fagemo, Gustafsson
USA - Turcotte, Caufield, Wahlstom (if released)

For D captains if you go that route:

    Russia: Romanov
    Canada: Ty Smith
    USA: Cam York
    Finland: Heinola
    Sweden: Sandin (if released)

Something like that. Didn't know if it was better to have them all in the one slot, or seperate ones. Still mulling it over, but I've had a few people message me with the D point.

I'd think separate is the way to go, unless picking a D captain means you can take an extra forward or something, otherwise I can't see anyone taking a D captain so all you're doing is removing players from the available pool.

I think it works out if you still have your group of captains including forwards and D.

If you choose a D, then that becomes 1/4 D and if you pick a forward, that becomes 1/12 forwards.... I think it makes sense from that standpoint... but then it becomes confusing for how the spreadsheet works.

I heard a good ol' conspiracy theory last night:

New York Islanders letting Wahlstrom play and not releasing Dobson to play is the Islanders exacting Revenge on Tavares, Toronto, and Canada for Tavares leaving the organization. Haha

    I like metaldude's list of D captains:

    Russia: Romanov
    Canada: Ty Smith
    USA: Cam York
    Finland: Heinola
    Sweden: Sandin (if released)

There are plenty of others who many will pick, but with the limit of 5 per country, no one else is necessarily a given. For example, many will take K'Andre Miller, but then what if they wanna take Knight and four USA forwards (who will be the top offensive team in the tournament). So there could be enough variety to go with just these captains.
If we don't do D captains, though, good chance 95% of the teams have all 5 of these D. But with the captains, it becomes quite the interesting decision as to which one to choose. All 5 of these are are awesome.
Plus it makes the other 5 D choices for our teams much more difficult.

Regarding the forwards captains, I don't see so many slam dunks. No matter who you make captains, the rest of the field will be kinda similar, so it doesn't really help to make too many captains. Only shoe-ins I see are Lafreniere, Denisenko and the USA guys. I don't see Kupari, Gustafsson, Fagemo, Veleno as slam dunks (maybe Hayton is though).
I would be up for 2 separate forward captain slots though. Something like this:
F Captain 1: Lafreniere, Hayton, Caulfield, Turcotte, Wahlstrom, Denisenko
F Captain 2: Veleno, Fagemo, Podkolzin, Kupari, Zegras (and you can add Gustafsson based on metaldude's list but I don't know that I agree with it)
D Captain: Smith, Sandin, Heinola, York, Romanov

I think having the captains this way will really open up the tournament to more variance. Which will make it a whole lot more fun!

And regarding goalies, I don't know if there's much to do about it, but good chance that 99% of the teams go with Knight and Askarov. So I guess maybe we should consider making them captains as well... but metaldude seemed to think it's not necessary.

    GET WELL SOON, DOBBER.

Regarding my previous post suggesting two forward captains, for example...
If Kupari or Fagemo are captains, will ANYONE pick them over Lafreniere, Hayton and the US forwards?
And if they aren't captains, how many teams WILL NOT pick them? Almost none. But would someone take them over Veleno, Zegras (factoring in only 5 players per country) - possibly.

    GET WELL SOON, DOBBER.

Liked what I saw out of Hayton and Drysdale today. I think Drysdale will be one of the very first names you hear in June.

Lafreniere was ok, I want to see him with the puck more. Seems like he's lurking a lot of the time, although he did have some good chemistry cooking with Hayton.

Byfield has looked good. I see big big upside there.
