Do you think they will play him... or let the veteran goalie play more? Doesn't Russia usually let the older more experienced goalie play?

Russia usually does weird stuff with their goalies in this tourney for some reason. The guy you expect to be the #1 rides the pine more often than not.

He's played in the KHL... only the 4th 17yr old in its history to play a game in that league. It's going to be hard to keep that talent on the bench.

Yup, I agree...but doesn't their other goalie have some experience in KHL as well?? And better numbers in the secondary league? And he was part of Team Russia?

Meanwhile... while we debate Askarov and Miftakhov... Team Russia is laughing as they totally plan on using Isayev.... haha

to be honest i got no idea either way...im just saying that he appears to be the most polarizing prospect out there atm....and one we know the least off...he is not even listed on Hockey DB yet.

Sounds like Lafreniere will sit out Wednesday and Thursday's scrimmages vs the University all stars. Unfortunate since Im going to the game Thursday. But I guess there was no guarantee he was playing both anyways.

17yr olds (undrafted) for Team Canada/USA typically don't do a whole lot in this tourny too. Pretty sure even McDavid wasn't used much and didn't have a dominating game, but you could see the top end talent in small plays.

at 16 Mcdavid had 4 points in 7 games at 17 (undrafted still) he had 11 points in 7 games. he didnt play once drafted ofcourse.

at 16 Lafreniere had only 1 goal in 5 games...but he could do well at 17, never know. Im pretty sure this is his last WJC.

Stand corrected. I must have been thinking his age 16yr performance was his age 17.

Indeed, McDavid was the 13th forward as a 16-year-old. Tournament All-Star and tied for the tournament lead on a Gold medal winner at 17.

Most draft eligible guys get that 13th forward treatment at this tournament if they make it at all but there are outliers.

Lafreniere didn't do a ton as a depth guy for Canada last year, but I'd expect him to be a top option this go around. It's notable that he's old for his draft year, as an early October birthday he has already been 18 for two months so this shouldn't be a hindrance for him. This will certainly be his last shot at it.

It is kinda crazy how many draft eligible players that Canada has invited, though that does highlight how the past couple drafts have been downers for Canada, while this one is more loaded. I wouldn't expect as much from the non-Lafreniere draft eligible guys, but he is not the only one among them who has already turned 18. Schneider, Mercer, Zary and Holloway are also all 18-year-olds with late '01 birth dates with this being their draft year.

I expect Canada will have a lot more 18 year olds this year compared to years gone by. Will be interesting to see how it works for them but they have a ton of talent coming up the pipe.
