As for me, fake tree but it's not a cost thing. Pre-strung lights are so much easier, no fire hazard, and so much cleaner. Plus with two cats, a real tree would just be a disaster. Plus neither of our cars are really conducive to going to get a "real tree". It could be done but would be a pain.

For the pine smell, there are both sprays and "scent sticks", you can just throw a couple in the branches higher up and it does a good job.

I'm sure there's a bunch of scentsy solutions for pine smells if you're into that sort of thing

This is what our family did as well - no permit required (back then) if you stuck to road right of ways and hydro lines. Once the kids grew up we switched to artificial and haven't looked back.

I think it's ridiculous that you need one, but it would also suck to get "caught" and get a huge ticket. I think in most provinces the permits are free or like $5. Unless you live in the US, then I dunno.
The permit is free in British Columbia. My wife makes me get one most years but we didn't this year. hehe.

Usually go to a tree farm and cut down a bigass tree to go in our open hallway. When I was young we brought back a 17 footer and it broke a hole in the ceiling when we pulled it up.

I use an aluminum pole. It requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting.

One year, we had a friend visit with her 200lb Mastiff. The dog trotted into the house, lifted his leg and peed on our fake X-mas tree. The friend was mortified but I was laughing so hard.

So its a fake tree that my spouse puts up. I'm not involved with the decorating but I would never entertain the cost and effort of putting up a real tree.

We support the local tree farmers . As always we’re search for the Charlie Brown tree in need of a home . Pricing has gone up last year to $40 for a 7 footer .
My good friend gets their tree from Home Depot until we learned the trees are imported from the states. Not even Canadian trees .

It also has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.

Love a real tree and the scent but my allergies don't. Only drawback about the artificial trees is they need reshaped every year when you take them out of the box but love the low maintenance. Still decorate fully outside with real wreaths on the windows.

On this topic, my cousin's boyfriend recently fell off his roof putting up Christmas lights. He's in rough shape. Don't trust ladders on slippery surfaces. Stay safe out there everyone!

Totally agree. My lights are on the trees in early November, usually on Veteran's Day here in the lower 48, however they are never turned on until after Thanksgiving.

Ya I usually put the lights up around the last weekend in November. I try and get it up before snow hits. But never goes on until Dec1st. Lights are off Jan1st, but taken down when it's safe to do so. The stuff on the lawn though is off Jan2nd-ish though.
