Default Help me understand the different sites' different PDO/SPSv%

I've encountered a bit of an odd thing in looking up a player's PDO. A number of sites are listing different numbers for the same player!

My understanding is that PDO/SPSv% is calculated by even strength on-ice shooting % plus on-ice save%.

James Neal is the player I was looking up.

hockeyreference shows his PDO as 961

natural stat trick lets you sort by 5v5 and by Even Strength as different categories. Neal's PDO at even strength according to them is 961, and at 5v5 it's 986.

Dobber's Frozen tools show it as 1002. NHL's site shows the same under its SPSv% listing, which I gather is the same thing.

What variables and numbers are these sites crunching differently?

I would assume they all have different variations of 5on5, 3on3, 5on4, etc. Some just count even strength, some are all situations, some might not count when the goalie is pulled or something else.

I’d rep you but apparently I have to spread some around first

Gotta say that would be a bit frustrating considering what PDO is meant to portray—I mean the difference between 1002 and 961 is the difference between a guy performing as expected and a guy that is having a serious run of bad luck

This is just another example of how bad statistics are for hockey in general.
