Default Am I so out of touch?

Let's take a look at the October fantasy top 100 goalies.

    Below is the top 31.

    1 Andrei Vasilevskiy TBL 97.1 1 0
    2 Frederik Andersen TOR 91.8 2 0
    3 Connor Hellebuyck WPG 77.3 4 1
    4 Sergei Bobrovsky FLA 76.6 3 1
    5 Tuukka Rask BOS 72.8 7 1

    11 John Gibson ANA 65.8 14 2
    12 Devan Dubnyk MIN 63.5 8 2
    13 Matt Murray PIT 63.2 15 2
    14 Ben Bishop DAL 62.7 12 2
    15 Martin Jones SJS 62.2 16 2
    16 Jordan Binnington STL 62.2 11 2
    17 Philipp Grubauer COL 58.8 17 2
    18 Carter Hutton BUF 55.2 21 2

    23 Petr Mrazek CAR 48.2 24 3
    24 Linus Ullmark BUF 47.4 27 3
    25 Thatcher Demko VAN 46.0 30 3
    26 Darcy Kuemper ARI 45.1 37 3
    27 Ilya Samsonov WAS 44.7 42 3
    28 Mikko Koskinen EDM 43.8 31 2
    29 Jaroslav Halak BOS 42.7 32 3
    30 Semyon Varlamov NYI 42.3 22 3
    31 Juuse Saros NSH 41.9 26 3

    A few observations:

    1. Dubnyk is rated #12 ahead of Murray, Bishop, Rinne, Binnington, Grubauer, any of which I would break my finger to trade my Dubnyk for. Why is he so high? Minny's crap and he has been declining the last couple of years.

    2. Kuemper is 26. He has taken over the number one job in ARI and has one of the best goalie stats since Jan 2019. He seems much too low.

    3. Hart is #8.That is much too high for someone not having shown much at the NHL level.

There are several other quibs with this list but above 3 stand out.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

I agree with all of the above for the most part. Kuemper at 26 isn't a travesty considering he still has to battle Raanta, but I get it.

Hart at 8 is aggressive, and it's time for Dubnyk to slide down a bit. I still like Dubnyk as an asset but the names you listed should absolutely be above him.

The season starts in early October. These rankings come out in mid'ish Oct IIRC. So these rankings, and especially Dubnyk, do not surprise me. I expect you'll see him fall further in November. Martin Jones seems high too, especially with that hot mess in SJ...

Good point. Goalies are so up and down. I still disagree with how those rankings were made at that time, but they probably look even worse to me because of how the season has transpired. Ranking goalies is not easy especially once you get out of the top 7 or 8 guys.

One thing to remember is that guys within a couple points are essentially equal. So 12-16 is essentially a big tie.

I think Dubnyk is so high due to start volume, but I expect a major correction in the first update.

And since solid goalies who play 65+ games are going the way of the Dodo, it may be that we simply start ranking tandems. Shit, the 40 win goalie might disappear outright.

I feel that these lists should be more proactive than reactive. It's much harder to do something about your goalie problem after the season has unfolded.

Welcome to modern day NHL goaltending. It's a complete shitshow. I agree with some of your points but I also understand the rankings. They're based on win potential so of course Dubnyk (60+ GP and 30+ W the past four years) will have a good ranking. A guy like Murray has a long rep being injury-prone (ie fewer wins).

Like I said I agree with some of your points but they're also after-the-fact observations (ie reactive).

I'd be shocked if the concerns addressed by the OP are not corrected at the next update. The season is only a month old, but A LOT has changed in terms of goalie evaluations. No position is more volatile, especially so far this season.

I look at the team in my sig, and I have Varlamov and Keumper. Both are playing well, though neither situation is ideal.

Rittich is another goalie I'd put quite high on the list based on this very moment. Beyond this season, or even the next few months, is near impossible to say.

Lol, yes because apparently I suck at evaluating goalies. I was hoping wiser goalie assessors out there would be better than me.

Given that the rankings are long-term keeper and only updated once a month I do not have a ton of gripes. The only real issues is Dubnyk, but again pre-season he was still looking at 65+ starts for a Wild team that people were a little down on, not sure anyone expected the dumpster fire. Dubnky could easily rebound with a 2.35 .925 month in November (wins who knows).

My one, "too high" is Hellebuyck at 3 ahead of Rask and Bobrovsky.
My one "too low" is Bishop.
