He can now be placed on IR, is this based on a change in his status with the team or just Yahoo acknowledging it isn't a typical suspension?

I'd speculate that Yahoo! probably got a lot of (negative) feedback that fantasy sports isn't fun when a player-not-playing can't be reserved somewhere.
They really should have this in all league by now.
A "PNP" spot: Player Not Playing.
Whether suspended, or unsigned, or leave-of-absense... whatever.
Buff's not Day-to-Day for real... unless he got injured ice-fishing or snowmobiling or whatever he's doing right now.

The only issue I have with changing his status from Suspended to Day-to-Day is that these decisions should be done in the off-season. Many people might have dropped Byfuglien already because they couldn't stash him. Now, others with be scrambling to grab him, which isn't fair to the original owners (mostly talking about keeper leagues).
If Yahoo changes the policy so that all Suspended players are now considered "Day to Day" so they can be put on IR+, that should be done from Day 1 of the season.
