Even with that long a term, the first number should not be a 7. Sure - it's possible that he plays well enough to turn this into a bargain, but it doesn't change the reality that on paper it's too high given where the market appears to be at present.

Keller just got essentially this same deal. I know which I would rather have.

Really? I don't get this. Hischier is already widely acknowledged to be an excellent two-way centerman despite still being only 20 years old- that rare blend of scoring skill coupled with defensive awareness and coverage. I think 7.25 is going to turn out to be a bargain, especially the way the cap and salaries are going. If I was a Devils fan, I'd be pretty happy about this. But perhaps I'm missing something.

Deal is done. 7 years AAV of $7.25 million

I think it is on the high side for sure but maybe he will grow to earn it. Also think this is part of the Devils showing Taylor Hall a commitment to winning long-term.

Eh, it's fine. A recent first overall draft pick with upside wasn't going to sign long-term for under $7M per, and it's very likely to be a bargain before too long.

I'll echo those sentiments. It's not like players are going to give a discount to play in the swamp.

Read what I said again - I specifically said it could turn out to be a bargain. That doesn't make the price any more reasonable "on paper".

I’m not sure what comparables you’re looking at here but it’s absolutely reasonable right now.

In fantasy it’s close. IRL Hischier is miles better.
