Yeah, so it looks like there is something very different about how the NHL is recording event location coordinates this season... and, umm, it's not great. Thread incoming
Just FYI because there had been a lot of chatter about new player tracking this year. It appears the NHL is posting shot distances (and other event coordinates) based on the jersey's position when in the past they based everything on the puck's location. As a result the average shot distance is up and expected goal models are off.

Example: If a player dives to tap in a puck in the crease, last year it would have been listed as around 2 feet. This year the same shot can be listed as 9 feet.
