I did not know about this. Don't mind it at all.

To me it seems like more work and confusion for what we'll get in return. I don't think it'll add many more goals. But I don't mind trying new ideas.

Personally I prefer less time between faceoffs which in turn punishes defensive teams more on icings. The left/right confirmation followed by line changes adds time between faceoffs.

Apparently, one of the Habs goals against the Leafs on Saturday was because of this rule. Not sure which one, but after an icing, Montreal forced Tavares to take the faceoff on his wrong side. Montreal won the faceoff, and immediately scored the goal.

Also the offensive team wants to make the decision ASAP so the defensive team doesn't get additional rest. I HIGHLY doubt it adds more than 5s/draw.

Mantha's GWG 4th goal vs. Dallas in final minute of Sunday night came from this exact rule.
Detroit picked the left-side of the ice for LH Larkin's backhand draw.
Larkin wins the draw & Mantha (a big body protecting the LW from attack) then released directly across the back of the circle to mid-ice... a clear 'Set-Play' win.
Hronek held the puck for long-enough for play to establish.
Feathered the pass into Mantha's wheelhouse... and Mantha was off and strokin' it.

    1:33onward of this video:

Red Wing color comm (Mickey Redmond, I think) mentions the dot-choice a few seconds after the goal.

[Tough play for DAL #4 Heiskanen. To follow Mantha could pull him too far from his goalie... and he has to skate thru traffic. Just perfect FOW execution by Detroit... offense created.]

Ya I would say even less. Any centreman likely has a stronger hand so will always choose the same side. It will be pretty automatic.

I heard about it during the preseason and it seems a bit weird and definitely advantage to the offensive team. It seems like the Head Coaches are the ones that are going to make the decision on which side the face off is taking according to what player is going to take it so they are going to have to know pretty quick what is the players strong side. At least that is the way it seemed to me. It was all a be weird to me. I guess it will grow on me.

I recall Marc Denis saying that all the Habs centers have the same handedness so the decision will always be easy for Claude Julien.
