What are the chances Holtby moves on from Washington and Samsonov is the new starter next season?

The Cap certainly looks like this will be his final season unless he wants to be paid (at most) $7M.

I do not know if they will make Samsonov the starter right out of the gate if Holtby is gone, they may grab a vet that could play 40 games as his back up. Or Vanecek could come up to be his back up as well / they could battle it out

I think it comes down to how Samsonov plays this season and not just in one game. If Samsonov ends up through the course of the season to just be a ok goalie than the Capitals might have to spend the big bucks on Holtby. I think it is a wait and see and kind of all up to Samsonov.

    Yep, completely agree.

This is virtually Tampa scenario 2.0 when they had Bishop on an expiring deal and Vas ready to take the reins. Tampa ended up dealing Bishop near the trade deadline and got some value versus letting him walk in free agency.

I wouldn’t expect the Caps to move Holtby this season but I wouldn’t be shocked if they decided to either. Both options have their merits...can hold for another push for the Cup. Or could just as easily trade to a desperate team for value they can’t turn down such as Calgary hypothetically speaking, which would essentially be as close to home as it gets for Holtby.

But as Smurf mentioned, it’s all dependent on Samsonov’s play. As for OP, I say odds are above 50% that Samsonov is the Caps starter come next season. Atm I’d say 75-25 that Holtby remains with the team this season. Though can easily become a 50-50 stay or gone scenario come trade deadline if Samsonov proves himself and the right market/suitors sets for Holtby.

If I had to put my money on it RIGHT NOW, I would bet on Samsonov being the guy next year.

But as we all know (see: Binnington, Jordan), things change quickly in the NHL. Guys who are pegged for greatness will falter, and guys who we have never considered before will win the Stanley Cup.

Samsonov has a few more games to be evaluated before they have to decide anything, but the fact that he's up & Copley cleared means that they think he can handle at least a backup role right now.

Given that, I think he's up for most of the season, unless he has a number of terrible starts before then. If he looks like an average NHL starter or better, I think he's the guy next year, like Hart in Philly is this year, based on what he showed last year.

Samsonov got in for a back-to-back last week, does he get another start this week?

After 2 days off, Caps are in a long stretch (Oct 8-24) where they are playing one game every 2 nights. Then a back to back Oct 24-25, then another long stretch until the next b2b on Nov 29th.

So I think they may start Samsonov 1 of every 3 games during this stretch, or even 1 of every 4. Otherwise if they only start him the b2bs he won't be fresh enough when he starts given the long layoff.

For this week, my guess is he plays the road game in Dallas on the 12th. Pure speculation of course.

Who to drop to grab him, OEL or ... ugh. I dunno, even Dubnyk and handcuff myself in WAS? Voracek isn’t helping me any, but not sure I can give up on him yet.

My other options outside Samsonov are:

    Hutton
    Smith
    Varlamov
    Greiss
    Ullmark

But at this point both Holtby and Dubnyk are crap and not sure how much of a hole I can survive. One has to go, or sacrifice a D
