Does anybody else think that this has anything to do with them really wanting Matthews to have the C, but he isn't ready. This makes it easier to transition from Tavares to Matthews, rather than taking it from Rielly and giving it to Matthews if they gave Rielly the "C" now. Tavares is 5 years older than Rielly?

How players are in the dressing room is something we as fans will never understand or see. I dont think we really know who's ready and who isn't. Guys like McDavid, Landeskog, and even Crosby were all young "leaders" on the ice, but it takes more than leadership on the ice to be a good captain.
Maybe Matthews didnt show enough off the ice to warrant the Captaincy. We already knew JT was capable of leading on and off the ice.
I think the whole "C" on the jersey is a bigger deal than it needs to be. It's a status symbol more than a role. You dont need a letter on your chest to be a leader.

It's possible that everyone in contention for the captaincy was considered ready. They still have to pick one guy.

I would have liked to see Rielly but Tavares was the easiest choice and makes the most sense. Hometown boy who is under contract for 6 more years. Proven leader and captain material. Management don’t have to worry even a little bit of John getting into off ice trouble. Good wholesome guy with a young family, carries himself well in front of the camera, even if he gives the most boring/typical answers. He checks all the boxes.
