Re: better value of keeper.
I am guessing Makar is not available at #3 then? If not, I would probably get Couturier then. The only player I would consider otherwise is Turcotte, but doesn't make sense to wait on Turcotte if you could get Couturier now for that. Maybe Byram, but as good as he may be, he now has Makar ahead of him and I don't think Byram will overtake Makar anytime soon on their PP1.
I have noticed this year, maybe more than some previous years, #5 rookie pick and beyond are extremely overhyped. Beyond Hughes, Kakko and Makar (who counts as a rookie this year in many leagues), there isn't a player other than Turcotte and Byram I think even deserving of that much attention. Maybe Zegras or Caufield I guess, but neither of them nor Turcotte are available to be drafted in any of my Yahoo leagues because they aren't in the system. So they won't be available until next years draft in those leagues. Guys like Kravstov, Byram, Cozens I guess could still turn out to be stars. But I wouldn't value them too much right now. Byram might be the exception. But again, him being in Colorado I think hurts his value quite a bit.
Unless you need a GK this year, like Shesterkin or Oettinger, I would probably try to trade any rookie pick #4 or later. Perhaps #5 and after if you want to try Byram. I think the hype on those picks will get you more surefire stars right now than you can draft with the picks. I wouldn't be surprised if some owners would trade a guy like Glass, Zadina or maybe Necas for a #4 or 5 pick. All whom I would much rather have than any rookie available at those picks. But again, the #4 pick becomes your #3 pick if Makar isn't available in your league. Unless Turcotte you love Turcotte perhaps or you want to try Byram, just not compared to Couturier. Dach I think will be a great NHL player, but not sold he has the fantasy ceiling worth those picks.
I would much rather have Couturier than Gusev. Gusev could be terrific sure. But I don't think hes going to get a lot of peripherals. Plus he has Hall in front of him. He could turn out like Skinner perhaps. But Skinner never seems to finish very high in any league I am in despite scoring a good amount.
