Need Advice...tough issue in Keeper league!

We have a 15 team points only keeper league, where you keep 6 of your best players each year. 16 players total. We had a team drop out this year that has 3 out of the top 5-6 point getters in the entire league. (no interest in hockey anymore). Normally we have a weighted lottery draft to determine 1st round draft order to keep teams from tanking to get top picks. The top 3 teams from the previous year aren't included in the lottery draft. What do we do with his team(the players from his team) to be fair to the entire league? Nobody knew this was coming, so nobody intentionally tanked last year to get these players.

The fairest thing to do is run your draft the same way that you always did. Just because one team had 3 out of the top 6 point getters has no bearing on things. Yes the lower-finishing teams will have the chance to improve their teams more so than in a "normal" year. But as you've already committed to a system whereby you promote the last place finishers to have a potentially better draft outcome, I don't see why the addition of better players in the draft pool would require a huge system change. No one still in the league is to blame for the situation, so the fairest thing to do is to keep it as objective as it has been in the past.

The problem there is that I know of about 8 new guys who would kill to take his team over and 12 out of 15 current teams would drops their current team to take it. How would we fairly pick who got it?

Pick the best of the 8..
Don't let anyone switch teams for that one... Tell them to draft and trade better rather than be envious.

Drop to 14 teams and put all players in the draft. Even the teams at the end of the first round will have more quality picks to improve their team.

yeah if you let someone currently in the league take over better team than they already have , you may as well fold the league as there be many unhappy GMs.

You just bring and outsider into the league...

This. Simple, clean, doesn't impact anyone else already in the league (compared to dumping the team's players back into the draft pool or letting another GM swap teams). Take whichever of the 8 have approached you first and go with him/her. The fact that you have 8 people lined up who'd jump at the chance to get in means you've got a strong league and this is the best way to handle it without upsetting the other 14 GMs still in the league.

this..if you can replace the GM, thats always the best plan..first come first served..or hold a draw..make a night of it
