Trade Rielly to Get Matthews? REP Given

For team in sig, should I do it? I know Matthews has loads of name value, but there are fewer young, top point getting D in the league than top centres. Also I am drafting Jack Hughes this year and as awesome as it would be to have Hughes, Matthews and Eichel, do I really want 3 of my 6 keepers to be centres? And if I SHOULD do it, would it be worth throwing in a little pick upgrade if he requests one? Or walk away and be happy with being stacked on D?

I would consider the trade in a points only league for sure. Hughes hasn't played a single game yet so why put yourself in the thought of keeping him. Ghost is due to have a bounce back year if you want to keep 3D but I would trade and get Matthews, then keep Kuch, Matthews, Eichel, Karlsson, Krug, Andersen. You have 3 1st and 2nd round picks. Get yourself a couple point scoring D in there.

I wouldn't make that deal, unless you have an IR. Matthews misses enough time and that can become an issue, and centers are the deepest position.

Selling Matthews short because of bad luck early on will be a mistake. It's not like he's 30 with a decade long injury history. I bet Barkov was given away for nothing years ago too. How many owners want those trades back?

Hard to turn that trade down. You’re STILL stacked on D-men, and honestly, Jack Hughes could have dual eligibility by this year’s mid-point, and be playing with Hischier !!! It limits his defensive responsibility as a rookie, and NJ will have both those players on PP1. You’d (worst case?) have 3 of top 10 centers in the NHL, barring major injury!

Not selling him short, I just think that he's more injury prone than Rielly, and both are high-end options at their position. One can't even pick between them based on NHL team, so it's close enough to err on the side of health for me.

I’m a believer in scoring. Pastrnak, though, will be for one or two seasons - after that his linemates will be????? Heinen? and who?? No, I don’t trade Reilly without a compensatory pick.

I actually like that deal more, due to diversifying your positional keepers away from center. I'm not sure on the positional scarcity difference between wing & defense, but it's reasonable. I'd be happy either way, but you can decide where Pastrnak slots in among his position versus Rielly among his.

Interesting question. I also like that deal more. And dont worry too much about what teammates a player could have in 2-3 years.
