    Default Thomas Chabot

I have an opportunity to get him in a trade, for a league that follows nhl cap hits. (team and league in signature, but out of date, not current, haven't had our draft yet)

For this year, for sure he will outperform his ELC salary. However, if I trade for him I have to consider what he will make on his second contract and will he live up to it fantasy-wise?

    Thoughts?

    1. What will he make on his new deal? Who are his comps?
    2. Will he still provide value once he is making the big bucks?

    Thanks!

Theodore in my mind is what he will get. Ottawa might pay slightly higher as they have more cap space but maybe they also give him max years.

And if he makes that money yes I still think he will be worth it

I think one of his best comps is Werenski and well, we're still waiting for him. Morgan Rielly would be another.

I think they either sign him during the season 8x7... or he bets on himself and doesn't negotiate until next summer.
I could see Chabot being a big time hold out next year if he puts up a 60pt season.
He's going to want top dollar and well... Melnyk + top dollar = ___________

Dumba is a good comparable.... I could see him using Trouba in negotiations as well.

He's one of the best players in a cap league this season. Period. So he's worth acquiring just based on that. And other than Ekblad, have there been any other high end offensive defencemen that have largely priced themselves out of fantasy relevance? Not really. I think he'll be fine to own down the line too.

Agree with EB - he's probably the best value there is in a cap league and you've got a pretty competitive looking team. Go get him and worry about next year's cap next year.

i'd predict 7x5 for his next deal but that's just a number that sounds right, you never know with Ottawa

if Chabot has a big year... he could be one of, if not the first Dman to demand that upper tier money on his second contract

I'm pretty sure he'll have 7M per year depending on term. On short term maybe 5.5-6M.
Now the negotiation process could be bad depending on Melnyk's willingness to pay + how the holdout situation resolves itself this season

I've heard Ottawa has already begun discussions with Chabot on an extension. I don't think there will be a holdout. In fact, I think this is one situation where Ottawa will get it right and pay Chabot at least $7 million a year on an 8-year deal. It wouldn't surprise me if he got close to $8 million.

Chabot is worth it, and despite all the backlash Melnyk gets (and deserves), I don't see how any team (even Ottawa) wouldn't see it as good value to lock up one of the best young players in the NHL. Ottawa may not be willing to pay money on aging players, etc., but Chabot is a player they won't regret locking up.

Trade talks revolving around a 2nd rd pick. For a 10 team league, and each team keeps around 4 or 5 players. So accounting for the +/- 50 keepers, the second round pick im giving up would theoretically be the 65th best free agent. Also remember this is a salary cap league, so the best player isnt always drafted because of their cap hit (ie Doughty and Subban dont get drafted, and definitely arent keepers because their pts/$ is relatively low).

In last years draft, the players like trochek, zucker, ellis, seth jones, hellebyuck were taken. So in theory, that's what I would be giving up with my 2nd rd pick to grab Chabot.

@ the comment to worry about the upcoming year and worry about the year after later. I expect that whoever I take with the second round pick to end up being a keeper. I feel like if I traded Chabot, it would be a wasted opportunity to only potentially get one year of chabot.

8mil is a lot for a dman. The only defensemen in our league that ended up being keepers in that price range were Karlsson and Burns. The sweetspot in our league, capwise for a dman, is in the 4-5mil range (ie ghost, kling, josi, OEL, etc). Every other dman in the 8+mil price range get let go back into the free agent pool because they (or someone similar) will be available to draft again later.

The thing about our keeper system in our league is that once you make a player a keeper, you decide how many years (1-4) you will keep him. Once that is finalized, you cant drop him no matter what (unless he dies , defects to khl...) So if I made Chabot a keeper, he would have to be an elite top tier dman at 8mil...

If his new deal was for 5/6m that would be easier absorb.

With Chabot on your roster next year you'll be in a phenomenal place to challenge for a title. 60 points (lock it in, upside for more) on an ELC. Worry about the year after the year after. He's easily going to get $7+.

Put it this way... which side would you rather for this season alone?

Chabot + whatever player you'd get in the last round of the draft
    or
ThePlayerYou'dKeepInsteadofChabot + whatever player you'd draft in the 2nd round.
