This isn't a math question, this is a legal question of how to interpret the instructions!

    I feel cheated.

My first thought was that the interior and exterior of the white lines didn't get double counted, so my answer would be 20.

Ah, yes... I feel ya, man... feel it hard.
(And nothing worse that having your kid come home and saying "Dad, you didn't get the right answer!".
"Well, what is it?" - said I.
Says my daughter: "I don't know, but the other kids and the teacher told me that our answer wasn't right".
    LOL... Super.)

You just ruined my whole day.

This is why kids hate math class. Not because numbers are hard, just because the teaching methodology is messed up.

I looked at that, it doesn't work out. If you zoom in, the black line goes straight through and just moves the right angle that would be in the black area to the white area, so it should still only be 28 either way you look at it.

Yet the four corners (black space) get counted.

That's not "either way you look at it", that's your way of looking at it.

    Pretty sure it's either way.

Zoom in, if you are going to count it as:
    1) the white line gets broken, then it eliminates the 2 right angles in the black spaces and adds 2 in the white spaces
    2) the white line goes straight through, then there's no right angles in the white spaces there and the 2 right angles are in the black spaces

Both scenarios, it's a total of 2 right angles in those spots. Unless you're looking at something else.

btw. FWIW - I have a "request for answer" into two sources:

    1. The two math teachers at my daughter's school.
    2. Oliver Roeder (fivethirtyeight.com). I'm not sure if this guy will reply, but his "Riddler" challenges over on that site are super-awesome/fun for those into the maths.

When I get formal answers from the all-powerful deities... I shall pass it on.
Until then, feel free to keep those answers coming!

It's a flat image so we don't know if the line actually continues. You're making an assumption, which is open for interpretation.

Added a photo. I think it's cut and dry. 2 are either in the white, or 2 are in the black. Whatever you assume, it can't be both.
