The trouble with the 3rd image, which seems to be the issue, is that it’s showing black lines on a white background outlining the white squares while the picture on the test has those same black lines disappearing into a black background so it’s not actually showing the same thing. That inconsistency creates a big problem.

    Nailed it. Infuriating.

    ^Nice find.
Although I award you zero points for not answering the actual question or joining in discussion!
[I will, however, send you some rep for the dig.]

I was going to contribute to the discussion, but was afraid it would come off as sarcastic with the link to the answer key :O)

For whatever it's worth, I'm glad I've already completed the 4th grade. I'm not sure I could get through it a second time...

FWIW - Besides this crowd, I've asked my mom (who is super-keen), my engineering graduating class, and my engineering office.

I counted 28 before reading this thread and even after seeing the answer, I am sticking with 28. The answer is counting the 8 right angles in the intersection of the two white squares twice.

The answer is saying that two straight lines that intersect perpendicularly have 8 right angles but it really only has 4.

    I concur.
School board's answer is wrong. (At the "intersection" of the square frames, they "extend" lines for an intersection where the picture does not show a physical intersection of the white)

I now grapple with the "letting it go"... or "make an issue of it".
I'm trying to choose the former.

The hard part is that there are several kids who (magically) came up with 36...
These kids, I've discovered, who have dads/moms who are "teachers"...
and those teachers could have possibly used their interior resources to go looking for the answer key...
and then teaching out that answer as if it is gospel.

That part... is the part that makes me mad.
'cause those kids been stomping their "correctness" (which is incorrect) in my kids' face.

Hmm... does this count as a correct answer?

    Huge props to Eric

^No. A second answer doesn't count for any marks. I tried pulling that off on a few tests in HS & Uni... teacher didn't award any points!
LOL. Also - ericdaoust is a very smart man & amazing with his internet skills. (Highly) Possible he found same source that alsrevenge was kind enough to share... and had to speculate towards the (interpreted) answer.
I actually award him high marks for standing firm on his 28.

A mathematician would go with 28.
Between this site, my university friends, and my work colleagues, I'm now up to 25+ (esteemed) people that formally answered "28".
(I do have one uni friend & wife who chimed in last night with 36... but that's wrong. The lines don't extend, though the solution set shows such... and that concept of "line extension" opens up a whole other can of counting angles...)
