There was speculation from some of the Tampa fans/media that there was some sort of contract issue, and with Tampa's cap situation, they weren't willing to budge. I'm sure Erne's demands weren't crazy, but Tampa needs all the cap space they can get. I believe they can re-sign Point relatively easily (even before this trade), but apparently the real cap crunch will happen later when Vasilevskiy's new contract kicks in.Originally Posted by ericdaoust

I also read somewhere that Tampa was sitting at 49 contracts (with 50 max) and needed to sign Point and Erne. The ongoing theory was that they'd move out one of their many backup goalies (likely Louis Dominque), but perhaps they've decided to go in a different direction and keep all their goalies for some strange reason.
