I’d take Turcotte here.
Hi everyone, I'm a new member, and this is my first post.
I need some help - I pick 3rd overall in our keeper league. It's points-only, full keeper, with bench (8 players) and prospect (8 players) rosters.
Hughes and Kakko will go 1-2.
I have the dreaded 3rd pick. I've got it narrowed down to Alex Turcotte, Cole Caufield, Zegras, and Bowen Byram.
As we all know, high-scoring d-men are more scarce in pts-only leagues than forwards, but should I consider taking one of those 3 forwards over Byram? I really don't want to whiff on this pick, but don't want to overthink it and be too safe. Will Makar's presence on Avs limit Byram's ceiling? Is Caufield too risky at 3?
I currently own Mark Stone, P. Kane, V. Tarasenko, G. Landeskog, A. Debrincat, V. Hedman, J. Carlson, D. Dubnyk. Prospects are drafted first, then the main draft happens (all non-prospects).
Any input and guidance is greatly appreciated!!!
(Active roster=15F, 7D, 2G, Bench=8 players, any position, Prospect roster=8players, any position, must have played no more than 10GP in any single regular season to qualify as prospect)
I’d take Turcotte here.
Welcome to the forums.
There's a section on the forums here called Hockey Prospects that I am going to recommend you go look through. You can also do a search for certain players and see where people like them.
You will find around these parts, Turcotte is probably the consensus 3rd overall recommendation but others like different players for different reasons. He's my #3.
I dont know how many teams are in your league, but starting 7D is a lot! I can see a reason to look to draft Byram simply because of that, but you'd be naive to think he's going to help you much this year or possibly even the next, depending on how develops. I still prefer Turcotte at 3rd but I'd have Byram right after him in this setup at 4th overall.

It would be Turcotte for me also is there any good leftover draft picks from years past or is this just for this years draft picks
Turcotte for me...
if you had a G bonus - Caufield

Turcotte for me as well, especially given LA's situation at center and Vilardi's ongoing back issues. Great opportunity for him to make an impact sooner rather than later.
Turcotte is who I'm aiming for at 3 as he's a safe and smart pick. I considered Caufield at 3 but we don't have bonuses for goals and I think Turcotte has the higher ceiling overall. But, Caufield wouldn't be a horrible pick. I'd have Turcotte then Caufield.

Thanks for this Axeman.
Yes, I forgot to mention it's 12 teams, so really deep.
I won 3 of the last 5 yrs, largely because I focused on scarcity of availability so loaded up on elite d-men (I had Burns, Hedman, Hamilton, Subban, Yandle, Doughty, Weber, Ekholm, Vatanen). And lucked out on goalies, which is all I believe you can hope to do, because they're voodoo (I had Bob and Dubnyk, and at one time Vasilevskiy).
Thanks alot for the feedback everyone!! And for recommending that other forum too. The more I read these posts, look at Dobber's guide, and my own roster needs, the more it's down to Turcotte and Byram.
I'd be okay to wait on Byram's production.
How soon does everyone see Turcotte contributing north of 40pts in the NHL?

Huh, interesting. I had looked at Dach too but wondered if he would take even longer to contribute pts at the NHL level than Byram so kind of threw him out of the mix. I'm wondering if I let someone else take him, then take a stab at him after a couple yrs if his owner is getting impatient...
Byram scored more goals than Dach, if I'm not mistake.

And if it hasn't been mentioned yet, a member of the forums actually has a list going of where players are generally being picked throughout numerous drafts. I believe most drafts have Turcotte at 3.
