So what does that mean if my autodraft was given a B grade? Hmm...

^It means you were a pain-in-my-butt to draft next to. (Yahoo! gave me a "C")
But seriously, a few years ago I employed a strategy of just following "fantasypros" for my ranks.
And you like that too (you mentioned)... so I basically missed my first couple of odd rounds where you drafted just in front of me.
[Perhaps I should've let Santo autodraft and brought you in later!!! LOL]

Conner (8) was who I wanted and had to settle for J.Jones (9).
Carson (36) was who I wanted and had to settle for Jacobs (37).

By round 4... I had just had it and decided to draft a guy purely because fantasypros had him pegged as "experts recommend" and your autodraft would've scooped him.
    And that was Deshaun Watson.
This ended up being a good move... if anything, just to force your auto-draft into a direction.

Sure enough - from my own FantasyPros mocks - your queue took Aaron Rodgers for your round 5 pick... and this FINALLY allowed me to draft somebody I wanted, Tevin Coleman as my RB2.
Fortunately - I was scouting your roster for the autodraft position most likely after round 4... and this made the rest of my draft easier.
But round 3 (Carson) crushed my spirit.
Based on what forecasters are saying - was the last good Tier II/III RB.
    I'm not thrilled about Jacobs.

Overall - though - happy to have you with us for another year!!!
Gotta pick a clever team name though now!

    P7's Draft Summary:

    DeShaunShineBand

I really didn't have a lot of time this year for fantasy football... so I'm basically winging it off of doing about 15-20 speed draft sims on FantasyPros.com.
I've been using that site for about 4-5 years now, and feel it gives me best vibe of "Who will be here at each slot".

As rataylor noted in-draft... there were ZERO mis-steps by this group for first 40-50 picks.
Everybody that should've gone off the board in the first 3-4 rounds... did.
There was absolutely NO value left on the board by mistakes.

Strategy: I would've liked to have gotten 2 RBs in my first 3 picks... something I've enjoyed well whenever I mock near end of round 1... and then 2/3 close.
I wanted James Connor but horrorfan - also using FantasyPros for his autodraft ranks - scooped him at #8.
Being PPR - and me living in ATL - I went with my "if you don't know, make a pick you'll enjoy" theory... so I went with Julio Jones. I'll get to watch all 16 of his games and it is Half-PPR... so a great WR has good value.

Round 2, thus, became a MUST-RB. I don't think I've seen anybody do well in this pool without a high-end RB.
But the main tier was gone... and Tyreek Hill was a clear high-volume WR there for pick 2.
    WR-WR, ugh...

Round 3 was my most painful, as horrorfan (again using same draft strategy) got the last of a perceived RB tier in Chris Carson (SEA).
Josh Jacobs was the best on the board, per many, but that could end up being a big boom... but also... a big bust.
If I did one thing decently, I cuffed Jacobs with Jalen Richard later in draft (Round 11).

By my pick in Round 4... I felt a bit forced, knowing how horrorfan would draft.
FantasyPros really like DeShaun Watson and QBs will start to fly in Round 5/6 with this group.
I took him. It's more BOOM/BUST potential. Hopefully his head is OK.
I played with a DeShaun-of-the-Dead name... but that's too easy.
Everybody likes KC & The Sunshine Band... but that's too length.
I like DeShaunShineBand - it comes out smooth... and I need DeShaun to SHINE!

Fortunately, this pick meant that horrorfan would default to picking Aaron Rodgers soon, which was good, because he didn't nab Tevin Coleman in front of me for next pick.
*Notably, my first 5 picks DID, actually, follow exactly with the "FantasyPros" draft sim I had running in background.

    It fell apart after that.

Before my pick in Round 6... FantasyPros suggested somebody should've been drafted... because the 4 guys it put on my board as top options were all gone.
This left little inexperienced me flailing for the right pick.
I went with Allen Robinson II in Round 6... who a couple other site pick guys liked.
Then I went with Latavious Murray in Round 7... which is sort of sad for an OBVIOUS back-up.
To be honest, I felt a bit lost after getting nudged into drafting an obvious back-up... like why would "experts" have this guy as a good option at this point. I mean, Alvin effin Kamara!

I did not watch a single second of preseason football. I don't know. Maybe NO uses LaMurray?!

I tried, like all these guys, to draft potential young risers at RB around Rounds 8-11, but they were all scooped almost as fast as I queued them up.
    This left me REALLY flailing.

I went with Curtis Samuel (CAR) in round 8, because we get a lot of CAR games on TV here in ATL.
I went with ATL's Austin Hooper in Round 9, because I get to watch ATL games.

    I drafted a D early... LAC in Round 10.
I know, I know... everybody says "Don't do that"... but I've always been a fan of drafting a D for their start of season.
    The Chargers start with:
    Wk1: Indy
    Wk2: Detroit
    Wk3: Houston
    Wk4: Miami
    Wk5: Denver
... that should be a good start... we shall see.

My fave pick was my round 15 pick of ATL's Matt Bryant.
Just about the only player in pro sports who is still older than me. (He is 44... I'm 42)
    Awesome.
    Go get 'em Bryant.

Another season of trying to stave off relegation.
This group gets tougher every year with new Tier II keeners joining us.

It could be my last year... but I'm gonna claw hard to open the season!

Really? I didn't think there was any chance I'd match up with anyone given how many mocks go through! Damn, I'm going to have to pay more attention to that in the future.

Yahoo! provided me with a grade of C- and told me I have a great team... if the goal is to finish dead last. Why ya gotta hate Yahoo!?

So I did a decent amount of prep for this draft, got in probably about 10 mocks over the past 2 weeks, mostly to get familiar with my draft slot and the draft board and figure out what round I needed to look for guys I had interest in. I have historically employed the zero-RB strategy to some success (middle of the pack last season with a playoff berth, but first round exit), loading up on high-end WRs and looking for value at RB. However, I've found I'm better at picking out WR value than RB value, so I switched it up this year, and targeted RBs early. A high-pick helped to dictate that strategy, the 4-spot was ideal ensuring I get one of the big 4 RBs yet not quite having to wait as long as 1, 2 or 3 to pick again.

    1. Christian McCaffrey, RB
Out of all of the mocks, not once did I end up with McCaffrey at 4, so right off the bat I was feeling uncomfortable.

My next pick I wanted to target a higher end WR, and typically I found one of Evans or A. Brown would be available, but not in this draft. The next WRs I liked were further down the board, so I went with who I felt was one of the next best RBs in:
    2. Devonta Freeman, RB

My next pick was not far off, and I knew I had a gap coming up. I liked Carson and Jacobs as the next two RBs, and felt there was a fair drop after that, but I never went 3 RBs previously, and thought that one of them might fall. I should have known better. So I took:
    3. Tyler Lockett, WR
Who I'm not unhappy with, but there was a larger pool of WRs I could have picked in the later rounds that I would have been happy with as opposed to RBs.
This was my one regret in the draft, passing on Carson here.

    4. Mike Williams, WR, 5. Tyler Boyd, WR, 6. Christian Kirk, WR
Like I said, there were a lot WRs I liked available in the coming rounds so I was still lamenting my pass on Carson.

    7. Mark Andrews, TE
Tight End was a tough position. The top ones went early, and the next tiers kept going earlier than I thought they should. I was pretty well set at RB and WR by this point. I could use some backup RBs, but knew I was targeting high-upside handcuffs in the later rounds, so I took an upside TE pick, that may or may not pan out.

    8. Kyler Murray, QB, 9. Ben Roethlisberger, QB
I was happy with where I was at the other positions and had a plan for my later round picks, so I thought I'd jump into the QB game. I don't usually like taking risks on rookie QBs, but look at Mahomes last year. I knew there were decent QBs left to back him up with, so I took the plunge. I'm not sure it will work out, but I'm more than happy with Roethlisberger as my QB if Murray tanks. I had a couple more WRs I was targeting, but they all went after Roethlisberger.

    10. Jaylen Samuels, PIT - RB, 11. Ryquell Armstead, JAX - RB, 12. Chase Edmonds, ARI - RB, 13. Damien Harris, NE - RB
Like I said, I had a number of high-upside handcuff RBs I would target in the later rounds, and I was very surprised I managed to get almost all of them (Mattison (MIN) and Thomson (KC) were the other ones I would have looked at). Samuels has a great O-line in PIT if Connor goes down at all, Armstead is being Fournette who is almost guaranteed to get hurt, Edmonds is behind Johnson in ARI and I've heard NE likes Harris and has a good O-line as well (although as rule I try to stay away from NE RBs as you never seem to know what Belichek is going to do there from game to game.

    14. Dallas, DEF, 15. Maher, K - DAL
Just like P7 above, the goal was to get a team with a good opening schedule, which Dallas has against NYG, WSH and MIA to start. Similar for a the kicker, grab a good offense against a bad team. So hopefully I'm set with those two positions for the first 3 weeks and go from there.

Ultimately it was a fun draft. This is a great group to draft and compete against, as everyone takes it seriously and has a decent knowledge and strategy going into it. Best FFL I've been apart of by far. Looking forward to the season!

Default Re: 2019 DobberHockey Fantasy Football League Tier I: Season 9

    EB’s draft recap:
First off, a disclaimer that I really have no idea what I’m doing in Fantasy Football. I watch maybe 3 games a year, superbowl included, and I hardly read any football articles. I actually find it an interesting way to do fantasy, just managing a team without a lot of the pre-conceived notions on who is a good own and who isn’t. My approach mostly just comes down to value, numbers, and a hunch or two in the draft room.
So, by that logic, usually my strategy going into drafts is loosely based on the time honed way many people draft, and that is to get a few RBs early, draft a lot of WRs, get a QB in the middle rounds, find a value TE at any point in the draft, and take DEF/K with your last couple picks.
This year, the RBs started flying off the board, and I ended up with a whole bunch of WRs, which meant I was way out of my depth trying to catch up on RBs, not having much of an idea on who the better later grabs are.
Based on doing a lot of mock drafts, here’s my thoughts on my picks:

In the first round, I was expecting to get either Connor or Bell. Check.

Second round, I had found I was usually getting an RB that fell, or Thielen. Check.

Third round, I expected to nab an RB of some sort that was still on the board, but as P7 mentioned, the top couple tiers were gone by the middle of round three. Woods was too good of a pick to pass up there.

Fourth round, seven of the eight picks between my two picks were RBs, which meant there was still no value. WR again, with Edelman, and hoping that he can keep up what he did in a shortened season last year.

Fifth round, needed an RB, and Drake was about the only one left with 10+ point/week potential all season (that I could tell). Though by owning him last year I know he can be extremely frustrating. Not exactly happy with this one.

Sixth round, I expected QBs to start going, and I was hoping Guice would slide to me in the 7th round. Looking back I should have nabbed him here and gone with a leftover QB in 7. Oh well, I’m happy with Newton.

Seventh round, after missing out on Guice, I went with Howard, hoping that he can keep some version of a heavy workload all year.

Eighth round, this is my big risk/reward pick. There wasn’t too much risk in my first seven selections, so with TEs flying off the board and no real value picks left, I decided to go for the highest upside and lowest floor guy, in Gronk. If he plays, it could make the difference in a few weeks at the end of the season. If not, well my TE position wasn’t going to be strong anyways.

Ninth round, handcuffing Bell with Montgomery.

Tenth round, plan in the next couple picks was to get another couple WRs and RBs, with one more TE, then go for my DEF and K. DeSean Jackson was the highest upside WR left, and that’s ideal for a 4th WR in my mind.

Eleventh round, Kyle Rudolph. Higher floor TE, and if he’s not on my roster by mid-season, I’m not upset.

Twelfth round, DK Metcalfe. This is just one where I sorted RBs and WRs by a few different things in the yahoo system (Proj rank, ADP, etc) and he came out as a decent option, and I read his blurb about possibly being healthy, and being a second WR behind Lockett. Upside of a second WR can’t hurt even if I’ve never heard of the guy… right?

Thirteenth round, I was going to grab another RB before the end, but stuff started getting busy and distracting at home, so I wanted to make sure I had a DEF and Kicker, as I had actually put them all on the do-not-draft list in case I had to completely autodraft (means I would have ended up with a ton of WRs and RBs as an ideal spot there). Anyways, so I jumped out to picking NE here, though they do have a terrible week one. Then I just put a ton of kickers in my queue, and jumped out to solve a few things at home.

Fourteenth round. Lutz. Cool, I have a kicker.

Fifteenth round. Best thing for me to do here was cover the weak NE matchup in week one, and take a second defence to play in week one and then drop. So that’s why the Jets are on my roster.

Yahoo gives me a B, I give myself a C+, and I go into the season projected to finish 9th. We’ll see if I can at least bump that up to 6th.

Hopefully "That Le'Veon Thielen" doesn't lose that loving feeling

Speaking of "Projections", here are Yahoos! "Draft Day Projections":

Worth noting, though - the spread from top team (1448 pts) to lowest team (1317pts) is pretty thin. (91%)
This means it is very possible this whole standings could be flipped on its' ass.

Also - it is super interesting that the Red Bulls have the projection they do, they must have some razor-thin narrow wins projected.
And horrorfan somehow has a distinctly low opponents score.
They must have a schedule that lines up well with competitors BYE weeks!?!

Props to EB for best New TeamName!

You have got to put Maverick as your team logo.

I'd imagine part of this for me is currently having a 0 projected at both defense and kicker for the entire season lol
