    Patterson told MLB.com that he hadn't thrown "for a few years" before last August, and noted of his high school playing days, "I didn't really have a good arm then."

    While that re-inspired him to pursue the sport, he was injured in a car accident in December and needed surgery. But Patterson stayed resilient, kept training and stayed sharp in a rec league.

    It wasn't until he threw 96 mph two weeks ago that his childhood dream came to fruition. "A few days later, the A's gave me a call," Patterson told MLB.com.
