Any of those but perhaps NJ would be compelling.
Pittsburgh doesn't need him unless they dump Schultz. That would be a very interesting possibility, though. Rust is going to be dumped, and Pettersson will sign for about $2 million. If the Penguins were also able to dump Schultz, they would have over $10 million in cap space -- assuming a couple $700k contracts like Trotman/Ruhwedel/Riikola are sent down to the minors. That could leave about $3m for Shattenkirk and about $6m for Gardiner, leaving Rutherford the ~ $1m he likes to keep around for cap flexibility purposes throughout the season.

    Gardiner-Letang
    Dumoulin-Shattenkirk
    Pettersson-Gudbranson
Johnson (unless you can dump him somehow)

    I can dig that.

I was going based on current cap situation. There's not room for both. Obviously moving Schultz would make it a possibility. Its just one or the other based on current state of things. Gardiner requires a really responsible Dman beside him. As positive as his underlying numbers are.
He still loses himself in neutral ice, over commits to players on a rush & tries to do too much after making a mistake. He needs someone behind him at all times.

just took him in round 20 of new 16 league draft where nobody with less then 60 games was allowed to be taken.

If he lands anywhere at all it should be a bonus for me lol

As I mentioned earlier, he wont be going to Edmonton. They dont have the cap space for him (hes not going to sign a league minimum deal) and whether they need him or not, they need a 3C more than a RHD PP specialist who really isnt much more than that. That and they still have to re-sign Puljujarvi.

Unless Ken Holland has a lot more moves up his sleeve, do not expect Shattenkirk to end up in Edmonton.

In that example, I just put Gardiner with Letang because Schultz is the RHD who really benefits the most from having the strong LH partner in Dumoulin. Letang's metrics were just as good, if not better, playing with other partners including Olli Maatta, while Dumoulin-Schultz really excelled together. I get nervous about Schultz having to play more with Johnson, or even Pettersson although he showed incredibly well in cushy minutes (with HORRENDOUS partners). If they were to get rid of Gudbranson for Shattenkirk that would leave a bottom pairing of Johnson-Shattenkirk or Johnson-Schultz. Not great. You're either spending $9 million on your bottom pair or you're using Johnson with Shattenkirk, and both of those pairs would be a total (mis)adventure defensively.

I didn't necessarily mean it was likely, just that they could use any halfway competent D they can find for cheap.

I am not sure his PP effectiveness outweighs his own end deficiencies so to call him halfway competent may be a reach for me.

    Arch @Archaeologuy

    Shattenkirk led the Ranger D in CF%, FF%, SF%, xGF%, and SCF%

    PDO of .984

May I please suggest offering him a contract?
From a very smart Oilers guy. I'm pretty sure your perception of what Shattenkirk doesn't line up with the reality of what Shattenkirk is.

He was the best on Stl. because he had a 2nd pair PP1 role where he didn't have to go against top lines every game, every shift.
Moving to Wsh - he admittedly felt extra pressure to do more and pressed.
With NYR.. he was 'the man' - and that's not what he's ideally suited for.
If he lands with a team that has some D depth and can give him a solid stay at home partner - then Shattenkirk could really bounce back

Buying out Staal would come still come with a cap hit of $2.9 million this year (cap savings of $2.8 million).

Buying out Smith would bring a cap hit of just under a million this year (saving $3.4 million in cap space).

Shattenkirk saves them $5.1 million in cap space this year.

The Rangers now sit $1 million under the maximum cap level. Buying out Smith or Staal would not have been enough and would have forced another move.

Just don't look at Shatty's 2020/21 cap hit

yes, I am aware of the #s. I saw that tweet too.

To be fair, he didnt have a lot of quality to compete with in NY. Just because he was a good Dman in NY doesn;t mean he's a good Dman and it doesnt mean he'll be effective in Edmonton.
