That was my initial reaction but I’d be lying if I said I fully understood LTIR usage. Can they have both Horton and Clarkson on? How does that work?
Any indication that this is a primary move for something bigger coming?

LTIR usage is unlimited as far as I understand. That said, I'm every type of confused about this deal.

Just found this via CapFriendly twitter....
After acquiring David Clarkson's contract, we now show the #Leafs with a projected cap hit of $82,234,699 ($734,699 above the $81.5M ceiling) with a roster of 22 (12F/8D/2G)
Leafs can still place Horton & Clarkson on LTIR and potentially exceed the ceiling by as much as $10.55M

There is still much that can happen between now and Oct 1, but by acquiring David Clarkson's contract, the #Leafs could now build a roster with a total projected cap hit as high as $92,050,000, and then place both Horton & Clarkson on LTIR to cover the $10.55M difference.

Someone, please correct me if I am wrong (as I am less than confident in what I think I know)...
The Leafs currently have a cap hit of at $82,234,699. The Cap limit is $81,500,000. Sending a defenceman to the minors (on paper, IE Dermott) to start the season will have the Leafs just under the cap. So far I am confident that this is correct.
One the first day of the season they can slide Horton and Clarkson on the LTIR to open up $10.55M in additional cap space. Then they bring Dermott back up (on paper) leaving them with $9.7M left to sign Marner. Again, I think I am confident in these facts.
Now I get a bit fuzzy...
To me, I think that if the Leafs sign Marner they now cannot do this until after the first day of the regular season (or same day or... you get the point). Is this correct?
There has to be a loophole that I am missing thou as something doesn't jive as I don't understand the need to trade for Clarkson today.
