Default Kasperi Kapanen vs. Sam Steele

    Hello All,

I Recently took over a 3rd last place team. I am obviously rebuilding and made a lot of trades to put something together. This team was terrrrrrrible.

I am at the point where I am trying to fine tune it and acquire youth who I can keep on my roster for many years to come. I'm not going to compete for a playoff spot anytime soon unless I get lucky with some solid trades. I've been presented with the offer noted in the title. I have Steele. What would you do? Any suggestions on how to improve this really bad team.

The way I see it Kapanen is a 50-point player locked into a good contract for the next three seasons. But if you're kinda far away from competing, that might not be super important to you. There's definitely some upside with KK, but he's probably locked out from meaningful PP minutes just given the depth of high-end forwards in Toronto. He should have solid shorthanded contributions, though, which is definitely worth something with your categories.

I'm not really sure how to project Steel, but I do like Kapanen. He's only a couple years older and he's already an established NHL regular making significant contributions on a deep playoff team. I'd probably take the deal instead of gambling on Steel's upside. I like your chances of translating Kapanen's value into a better asset / assets over the next couple seasons more than I do with Steel. Anaheim is a pretty rough situation right now, and he's going to be in to put up comparable point totals to Kapanen.
