Default 2019 Draftess vs Rising prospects

    Hey dudes,

I'm at #55 in my draft and i'm trying to figure out if it's too early to swing on some old draft rising prospects.

I'm debating on one of these guys vs the draft class around the #55 mark

    Evan Barratt
    Oskar Steen
    Taro Hirose
    Dominik Kubalik
    Ilya Mikheyev
    Trey Fix-Wolansky
    Otto Koivula
    Matthias Emilio-Petterssen
    Josh Brook
    Oliwer Kaski

    vs

    Ryan Johnson
    Ilya Nikolayev
    Nathan Legare
    Alex Beaucage
    Maxim Cajkovic

    I'm not looking for a rank'em , just who's the guy!

I'm a bit light on D prospects if that helps

Thanks for the help in advance!

You are well beyond the point in your draft where picking older prospects who are much farther along makes a ton of sense. I'd be all over Hirose as a guy likely to play a full season in the top-6 for an NHL team right away.

I totally agree with this statement and I think the older prospects (leftovers) tend to get overlooked in these types of drafts. In my draft this year, I benefitted from some older players being passed on. I picked Hronek at #22 (then traded him for Ty Smith and pick #29), Cernak at #28, Rasmus Andersson at #49 and Chmelevski at #52. They are just further along in development and more of a sure thing at that point in the draft.

Brook is a good pick for long term. If you are looking for someone to produce immediately I'd look at Kubalik. I believe he will be a top 6 guy in Chicago this year

i also would go with Hirose he is going to get all the chances in the world to play this year that late in the draft he could be a real value pick and ready to go as apposed to some who may be 3 years away

Why do you say this? I am genuinely curious.

I have my eye on the Chicago roster and see that there are going to be a couple if nice winger spots available but the Blackhawks have a ton of players fighting for those coveted spots.

Let's assume that these 6 players are a lock to make the team (Toews, Kane, Strome, DeBrincat, Saad, Shaw). I assume that Anisimov and Caggiula have a roster spot as well. Next, there are 2 more players under contract in Carpenter and Kampf. This brings us to 10 players.

Sikura, Perlini, Wedin, Kubalik, Nylander, and Saarela look to be fighting to fill in the last 4 slots up front (assumes carrying 14 forwards).

What is Kubalik going to bring to the table that is going to see him line up as the 3rd guy on a line with Toews/Kane or Strome/Debrincat? How is going to vault past two of Shaw or Caggiula or Sikura or Perlini or Wedin or Nylander or Saarella?

Clue 1 for me is Stan Bowman calling him a sniper and that he should fill an offensive role on the team. It doesn't sound like he'll be on a checking line.

The other thing I've been looking at is a lot of Hawks fans on hfboards are either pencilling him in with toews-kane or debrincar-saad.

I'm not saying it's a slam dunk or anything but just what I think will happen

I agree with Moses. I think Kubalik was a more attractive name before the Hawks went out and acquired Shaw and Perlini.

There are going to be one or two spots open in their top 9 and they are setting it up to be an absolute dog fight between Caggiula, Sikura, Perlini, Kampf, Wedin and Kubalik (and possibly Nylander and Dach).

I feel like Kubalik being on a one year deal is guaranteed a spot, obviously if he doesn't fit or make an impact they will waive him and he'll probably go back to Europe. But I feel being an older prospect he'll be given a long leash.
