Rantanen - he's proven, and while maybe Hughes will eventually be to defensemen that Rantanen is to forwards...he's not there yet and frankly the odds say he probably won't be. Always take the proven. Always.

I'd go so far as to say that even if this is a salary cap league, you still go Rantanen. If you have cap issues, find another way to save money. Heck, take Rantanen, trade him for Q. Rantanen all day, all night. Rantanen is around 85-90 forward and compared to whoever D-man is just a no brainer to me...unless Hughes is becoming Erik Karlsson. Is he?!

Right now, we don't know that. We DO know what Rantanen is. If Hughes ever becomes Karlsson 2.0, then his value is close to Rantanen and this trade makes more sense. Wait for that to happen.
I wouldn't make this trade on the hopes of that.

Rantanen for me as well. Hughes may become the next Karlsson but have no idea if that is where he is heading. Rantanen is a young star and will only continue to improve. Go with the sure thing.
