Keller vs 4th overall pick

How would you compare the value of Keller vs 4th overall pick in a prospect 2019 draft? This is for a 14-team dynasty league with G, A, SOG, PPP, SHP, PIM, Hits, Blocks that uses salary as well.

I think it entirely depends on who gets picked third overall. I'm assuming Kakko/Hughes go 1-2, and then probably one of Turcotte/Byram going next at 3rd. If you can get Turcotte with the pick, then I think I would prefer the pick. Turcotte is one of my favorite prospects in a long time, with his complete two way game coupled with a very underrated offensive upside.

Another wrinkle here is whether you differentiate between forward positions. It's likely Turcotte will end up as a Center, whereas Keller has winger eligibility which can lend to his value. I think in your shoes, I would still prefer Turcotte in a vacuum -- but it would probably also help to see the rest of your team to see whether you're close to competing for a title or not. If you're in a rebuild, I'm absolutely taking Turcotte because I like his all-around complete game and upside more than Keller, but if you're already competing then Keller should get the edge. I think he's actually poised for a big year with Kessel coming to town and a healthy Schmaltz.

If Turcotte gets drafted third overall, then this is a moot point and I'm just keeping Keller over guys like Byram, Cozens, Zegras, Dach, etc.

tough one to me, Keller is not multi cat guy and is stuck in arizona. He shoudl be marner/aho/point type of guy but he is not...not yet at least.

if you are in the rebuild i probably go for the pick, but there is a chance Keller takes off in next year or 2 and will make you look silly. At least until that pick starting producing at that level which is probably few years away.

Ok with that roster in a 14-team league, I'm thinking you should just keep Keller unless there are cap issues. Even in that case, I would probably still want Keller since it looks like you should be competitive. You really want to take advantage of MacKinnon at his current salary, just unbelievable value in that window.

Thanks mounD. I was thinking the same. How much of a gap do you think there is between Keller and the pick. This comparison is part of a bigger trade that I am contemplating. I need to shed salary and can move Kopitar (who I did not even list and is sitting on the bench because I can't play him).

That's hard to say. As you can tell from my previous post, I really like Turcotte and I think he's got a comparable offensive upside to Keller long-term. I think given his style of play, he will probably end up being the more proficient all-around contributor, and we know that Keller isn't the most well rounded fantasy producer. I don't expect Turcotte to be in the NHL until 2020-21, and he probably won't be putting up points on Keller's level for another 1-2 seasons after that, so Keller is definitely the better own for the short term. Beyond that it's tough to say, but if you can shed salary another way I think in your situation I'd prefer Keller here.

I will concur with the quote of a quote of a quote. Especially when you also own Kessel. I think Keller is (finally) going to have his breakout year this year as he has someone who can actually play offense on his line.
