Shaw's a decent enough player but that's a good contract for MTL to be offloading. Not sure what Chicago is doing getting themselves back into cap hell.
Also, is MTL clearing cap space for a big signing? Probably not but fun to speculate.
The Montreal Canadiens have traded Andrew Shaw and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for 2020 second and seventh-round picks and a 2021 third-round selection.

Me think of the " timing" of the trade, end of the day on Sunday, on July 1st eve, means or ( could suggest ) a Duchene contract could be in the works.
but this thread is about this trade.
I agree, why Shaw back to Chicago? Not sure that moves the needle all that much.

CAN-AM United Hockey League ~ 6th Year
CAN-AM Memorial Hockey League ~ 6th Year
CAN-AM Hockey Association - 1st year
So the Habs got Shaw for two 2nd round picks three (was it four?) years ago and get back now a 2nd and 3rd. Solid asset management there.
Shaw played great last year but he's injury prone and his contract wasn't awesome. Good move there.
And their cap space goes up to $12.6 mil!
