I'm not sure how much this helps Keller but I can see this helping Schmaltz. Schmaltz is a good distributor and Kessel is a shooter. That normally adds up for both.

As a Kessel and Keller owner I’m ecstatic about this trade.

Phil has been nothing but a production beast the last few seasons. Yes, he doesn’t play defense but that’s not why Arizona wanted him. They need goals! And they’re (Tocchet) going to give him every opportunity to score. Top line, Top PP. and with the passing ability of Keller and Schmaltz, I could see Kessel returning to 35-40 goal territory.

I think Kessel will be great for the Coyotes and will be a point per game player again.

Love this deal for the Coyotes. Kessel is a really good player. He apparently is a weird dude, but weird is perfectly fine, if you do your job.

I think Kessel is one of those misunderstood players in the league, but I have to give Rutherford kudos for this trade. That is some seriously good value, talent-wise and cap-wise, for a player who is past his prime producing window and notoriously poorly conditioned (no big deal for a kid in his twenties, but a much bigger deal in your thirties). I think Kessel starts experiencing nagging injuries and Galchenyuk will thrive in his new home.

Galchenyuk will not thrive. He’ll be fair to midlling. That’s what he is. An ok mid line-up player. The Pens clearly lost this trade but the cap space and “character” issues were more important to them.

There is nothing in either players history, that suggest that either thing will happen.

Steve Burtch posted some interesting information re: these two players on his twitter feed earlier. Essentially, over the last four seasons in all situations Galchenyuk and Kessel have almost identical iGF% and ixG/60. Obviously, Kessel is a better playmaker by a good margin, but Galchenyuk's shot-assist contributions looked downright impressive over the same sample.

This is an obvious downgrade for the Pens from Kessel to Galchenyuk, but there is some reasoning here and a bit of unheralded upside.

Normally, yes, but if he puts up even 65 pts, he will likely get that kind of money given how much these other RFAs are supposedly going to sign for.

Well, sure, but "player history" is only one of many factors to consider when predicting a player's future.

I mean. In the list of Marner, Aho, Point, Tkachuk, Connor, Laine, Boeser, Rantanen, Meier I would put Keller comfortably at the bottom.
