Great idea for a thread, was actually thinking about this during the draft and some of the names stand out.
Kudos
For a few years, I've been curious which NHL teams trade-up on draft day(s) to get their guy.
Though I didn't see Saturday action, these are the trades listed on NHL.com suggesting a team traded-up to "get their guy".
2019 Entry Draft Trade-Ups:
011 (ARI) - Victor Soderstrom, D
...

102 (BUF) - Aaron Huglen, D
108 (SJS) - Yegor Spiridonov, C

136 (FLA) - Henrik Rybinski, RW
143 (BUF) - Filip Cederqvist, LW
153 (WAS) - Martin Has, D
...

...
201 (MON) - Rafael Harvey-Pinard, LW
208 (STL) - Vadim Zherenko, G
211 (SJS) - Santeri Airola, D
We shall see if any of these pan out any better than the standard "wait & draft" picks.
Here's some 2018 "Trade Ups":
022 (NYR) - K'Andre Miller, D
025 (STL) - Dominik Bokk, RW
...
058 (PIT) - Filip Hallander, C
062 (EDM) - Olivier Rodrigue, G

Here's some 2017 "Trade Ups":
007 (NYR) - Lias Anderson, C
026 (DAL) - Jake Oettinger, G
027 (PHI) - Morgan Frost, C
031 (STL) - Klim Kostin, C/LW
...

...
078 (EDM) - Stuart Skinner, G
...

...
...
165 (NYI) - Arnaud Durandeau, LW
185 (SJS) - Alexander Chmelevski, C
...
199 (MON) - Cayden Primeau, G
Several teams show up a few times, suggesting a strategy of willingly trading up, including:
*PHI, STL, NYR, PIT, SJS (*most often*), MON (three straight 7th rounders), EDM (goalies in 17 & 18)

The Sens trading up for Sogaard confused me a little. I feel like goaltending is the one area they didn't really need to add to right now with Hogberg, Gustavsson and Daccord in the pipeline. Time will obviously tell, but Carolina turned those picks into Rees and Honka.

With the amount of uncertainty in this years draft... I kind of like Carolina's approach - strength in numbers.

Ready to update this thread!!!
2022 Trade-Ups
007 CHI - Kevin Korchinski (Pick traded away by OTT in DeBrincat trade, earlier in the day.)
011 ARI - Connor Geekie (Pick traded away by SJ for later picks 27, 34, 43)
013 CHI - Frank Nazar (Pick traded away by NYI at start of draft for Romanov.)
025 CHI* - Sam Rinzel (Pick traded away by TOR. *Asterik since TOR was likely to have approached CHI/ARI to find out what kind of draft pick upgrade they'd have to "give away" to get Mrazek contract off roster.)
029 ARI* - Maveric Lamoureux (Pick traded away by EDM. *Asterik since EDM was likely to have approached CHI/ARI to find out what kind of draft pick upgrade to "give away" to get Kassian contract off roster.)
None of these are player-specific trade-ups, IMO... so much as these teams just landing at spots of teams that were a fit for increasing their teams veterans and moved a pick to do so.
Both CHI and ARI "moved up" because they are taking other peoples cap-garbage and the trade-up that comes with that service.
Sort of a boring first round where no team really did a player-specific trade-up, on the spot, to draft somebody.
079 VGK - Jordan Gustafsson (Pick traded away by TOR, for two lower picks)
086 TB - Lucas Edmonds (Pick traded away by LA. *Notably, Edmonds is an OHL overager... passed over in previous drafts.)
091 SEA - Ben Macdonald (Pick traded from BOS.)
094 ARI - Jeremy Langlois (Pick traded from ARI.)
BUMPEROO.
A thread I'll now be tracking for a FIFTH year (going back 7).
The intention has always been more to focus on teams that are trading up "FOR THE PICK THAT IS UP".
[some of the past listed trades were made prior to the moment-in-draft-of-that-pick]
This suggests the team is so confident in the value of the best available player (or soon to likely be picked player) that they want to pick him NOW.
So... for anbody that is watching live (I hope to be)... help a co-Dobber-forum-fan out and post anything you see that fits the above.
It will be interesting to see if Michkov is that player this year...
The phones will be ringing at 4 and 5 and maybe 6 if ANA/CBJ/SJ pass on him.
Just dropping a reply to mark that the 2023 first round had ZERO trade-ups on night #1 drafting.
Every team very satisfied to just make their pick.
.
2023 Trade-Ups
043 NAS (C) Felix Nilsson (Pick traded away at moment by DET for the 047 and 147)
051 PHI (G) Carson Bjarnason (Pick traded away at moment by CHI for 2nd in 2024)
071 SJ (C) Brandon Svoboda (Pick traded away at moment by CAR for 94 & 100)
079 DAL (C) Brad Gardiner (Pick traded away at moment by NAS for 3rd & 6th in 2024)
090 NYR (D) Drew Fortescue (Pick traded away at moment by PIT for #91, next pick, and 7th in 2024)
115 TB (C) Jayson Shaugabay (Pick traded away at moment by NAS for 4th in 2024)
206 WAS (G) Antoine Keller (Pick traded away at moment by SJ for 7th in 2025)
218 NAS (RW) Aiden Fink (Pick traded away at moment by NJ for 7th in 2024)
224 CBJ (LW) Tyler Peddle (Pick traded away at moment by VGK for 7th in 2024)
I think that's all of 'em.
I think we can say that Montreal did well with those 7th round trade ups in your first post.

^Wow - good catch.
Yeah... both Primeau (2017, 7th round) and Pinard (2019, 7th round) have both turned into future NHLers in their past few seasons.
Looks like somebody was nudging GM back then to get them one more chance to pick. Good job by the Habs there.
(Interesting trickle-down find... the Habs got that 2019 7th by flipping their 2020 7th to PHI. PHI then took that 2020 7th and their own 2020 7th to trade up in the 5th round and take Elliott Desnoyers... good pick).
Some REP to you for the catch!!!
BUMP - just to put this up near new posts so I can update with draft-day trades (preferably "at the pick" trades).
Curious thing to watch for today:
Last 5 years, CAROLINA / WADDELL have been a team that "trades down" for quantity of picks... and swings for the fences (O-centric players or Russians).
Does that trend stay with Carolina?
Or does that trend stay with Waddell?
It will be interesting to see!
BTW: Looking way back to 2017 - some good "trade ups" there...
Here's some 2017 "Trade Ups":
026 (DAL) - Jake Oettinger, G
027 (PHI) - Morgan Frost, C
078 (EDM) - Stuart Skinner, G
^Did you see that comment is 5 years old?
(Not really any point attending to it... LOL...)
The thread is just more a historical tracker...
To see if any teams (GMs) have been showing any trend or success... year-to-year.
