I agree that trading a first round pick for a guy that the Lightning were already looking to unload is asinine. Even Subban didn't fetch a first rounder.
That being said, I think Miller is a good fit as Axeman mentioned above. And honestly with all the contracts being signed lately if 5.25m for next 5 years is what it's gonna cost for the second line C then i'm okay with it.
Goalies: If I'm pickin em you best be sittin em!
brutal weekend for nuck fans.

Miller has proven to be versatile, that much is true. But you,re taking a player from TP, who had A LOT of pressure to move someone and you give them two picks, including a first round?
I mean how worse can it be.... 2x 2nd rd would have been a lot to pay already.......
At least Miller's contract is great...

Yikes. At least they're not in the same conference....??
I like Miller, he should help the Canucks a good amount, but this is still too high a price, even if he winds up helping the Canucks make the playoffs.
My biggest quibble is over the protections. How are NHL GMs still so myopic and so lacking in creativity that even when putting protections on a pick, they only do so for one year. We just saw Ottawa **** themselves with this sort of protection. If you don't want to give up a lottery pick, then protect it from the lottery going forward in perpetuity, or have a timeline where it caps out and turns into a 2nd + a 3rd or whatever. There's a real chance that the Lightning just landed a top-10 pick in the 2021 draft. Just be smarter. GREAT return for the Lightning in a position where they didn't have much leverage.
Right player to target as a buy-low guy, wrong price to pay

I guess this is good for JT Miller owners, but not really the Canucks.

Its not a good trade and its an overpayment but Miller makes the Canucks better and theres no doubting that. The problem is I don't know if the Canucks are good enough to make the playoffs next year. Need another top 4 D without giving any impact players and we have a shot. All in all clearly Benning trying to save his job by making the playoffs at all cost.
he's on such a good contract and like others have pointed; out a versatile guy. so if the nucks need to move him to refresh I'd imagine they get value back .
guys like him are getting 6-7 when being re-upped so its great that the cap went up 25 cents
And this is why players don't like taking team discounts. JT took a paycut because of state taxes, now he's on a team where there are high Provincial taxes.

Good point.
I assume Miller didn't have a NMC. I suspect Kucherov and others in Tampa who take a pay cut to play in a low-tax State would have a NMC.
Anyone care to predict Miller's production in Vancouver next season? He should be a feature on the team's top power play unit.

League has been running continuously since 1997-98
Miller had a MNTC starting this upcoming yr. (kicks in Jul 1st) 8-team no trade list.
Kuch has a NMC kicking in 2019-20 as well. Still can be moved without his consent.
---EDIT---
I messed up the years on the NMC
Kucherov. NMC kicks in 2020-21 season. He has a 11mill signing bonus this yr that kicks in on July1st. So that's how he kinda got his own NMC. I'm assuming this is still technically an RFA yr for him, and players can't have NMC/NTC during RFA yrs.
JT Miller. Has a MNTC that kicks in on July 1st, 2019.
