Dubas is cleaning Lou’s mess. No salary was retained opening $6.5M in cap. That was the cost to clear space for a bit of extra wiggle room to hopefully get Marner and maybe Kapanen done too if he can also get rid of Zaitsev.

It's not Lou's mess, it's all their mess. They were contemporaries with the Leafs when this got done and I am certain everyone had a hand in it and Shanny signed off.

I'm certain it helps their chances of retaining Marner but Carolina did them a favour here. I'm sure they'll look for a favour back some day, late first round pick or not. I kinda wish all 30 other teams made the Leafs sweat it out hard.

You really think of Dubas had the full reins at the time that he would have signed Marleau to that money and term? Highly unlikely. That was a Lou signing and it is pretty clear.

pretty sure the marleau intent 2 years ago was supported by hunter/shanny to add some leadership to the young squad to help insulate them a bit as they continued to develop while dubas was still shining everyones shoes .

If they buy him out pre-July 1st I doubt they need to pay the bonus, just the buyout dollars.

Lol. Yes.

I do believe Dubas was doing most of the hard work under the guidance of the others but I also know that nothing gets done in isolation on a hockey team. Everyone cooperates and decides things as a group. So there is no “I’m cleaning up my former colleague’s or boss’s mess.” Everyone is in the mess.
