31 team dynasty league that uses NHL sized rosters plus unlimited prospect lists. The league counts a few "defensive" stats such as PK TOI, blocked shots, hits so defensive dmen have some value.

I like the Mat Robson pick. Not much in terms of goaltending in the Minny pipeline.

Reviewing these picks it's interesting to me that in a 9 team league where each team starts 1 goalie per week there were 14 goalies selected. Every year we've drafted before this theres usually only 2 or 3 selected.

Anyways I think I did pretty well with my picks. Don't know if Turcotte at #4 was the best move. Overall thoughts are welcome!

    BUMP of the day.
For reasons unknown... I've decided the 2019 draft would be a fun one to "look back on".

And... a lot can be learned from checking in on how we thought & drafted in 2019.
Anybody got "skin in the game" in this thread?
    How'd you do?

[I've been reading back - for the history, forecast, and now "lookback" - on the 2019 draft recently. Curious to see what we thought back then.]

I did great, I posted 1 cap draft in which I had 4 picks. 3 were late, and were: Konovalov, Bjornfot, and Keppen. Bjornfot & Konovalov (technically) made the NHL before the league folded. My first round pick was Cole Caufield who I promptly traded for Jamie Benn.

I won the league the Covid season (no playoffs) and again it's last season before folding. I'm sure Bjornfot got into games for me at some pint.

My Pick in my draft: Peyton Krebs.
I don't think any of us saw Krebs coming to be a 4th line center - hopefully Buffalo has bigger upside planned for him.
We'll see. I'm hoping that BUF simply only has this spot available for him and sees full-time sheltered center as a good developmental role for him.

Tough spot to draft was 3-10.
A lot of people thought Turcotte and Dach were going to pan out... not so... yet.
Cozens has popped recently, looking great.
    Boldy looks great too.
Most people were high on Caufield's upside - so I think he went in drafts about where he should have (5-10 range).

Mo Seider turned out to be a well-warranted pick by Detroit... we shouldn't have let him fall.

Nice 4-year hold on Pytor Kotchetkov by those that drafted him.
Hard to hold a goalie for so much developmental time, but sometimes (Sorokin, Sheterkin - now Kochetkov), it pays off.
[FWIW - the 2023 NHL draft seemed to have a lot in demand goalies in the 2nd round. It'll be interesting to see how those 5-8 goalies drafted 2nd-3rd round pan out.]

I remember a lot of big hype to CAR 3rd round pick Patrik Puistola - UNSIGNED... he was the player flipped by EDM for bust-city Puljujarvi.
People were all aboard the Puistola train. I still hold that Carolina's "big swing" drafting hasn't paid off in last 5 years with their "trade down" tactics.
I'd have to look through these threads to see where he went in other drafts.
29th overall in this league... even though Puistola went 74th overall in NHL draft. He was the sexy "reach" pick of 2019 drafts, IIRC.
This has been something I've been saying about Andrew Cristall (40), Jayden Perron (94).
If they are sliding really late in NHL drafts... maybe we shouldn't be reaching for them so much either.
    That's another "we'll see" (come 2027).

    Nick Robertson is huge TBD.
After his draft+1 enormous season, people were talking about him like he was a top10 player of that draft.
    He had 55 goals!!! Fifty-five.
The forums were completely abuzz in summer 2020 with "Where does Nick Robertson slot in with the 2020 draft?!".
He's become my go-to argument for "Don't put too much stock into a D+1 CHL season - a lot of players put up big numbers". (Small players especially.)
But NickR has been very good at AHL level, point per game over last 30 spanning past two seasons.
He IS 5'-9"... which isn't a big deal in the OHL... but does become a big deal in NHL.
Just because Caufield and DeBrincat are NHL players - doesn't mean every small player has the skill-set to pull off an NHL-fit.

It seems that a draft is good to "look back on" about 4-5 years after it has passed.
The first rounders have had enough developmental time where we can look at where they are and say "Did I have this player pegged right BACK THEN?"

It's fun going back and reading who people thought were "steals" and good picks. Sure, it's early, but still fun to look back and see what people expected from their drafts and who went where. Just like the real NHL, there were hits and misses.

    Bolded my picks.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my first 4 picks. I tried to trade up starting at pick 7 to no avail to draft Zegras and he ended up falling to me at 10. Love Pods at 11 and I feel Newhook was the last pick in his tier. Loved that Knight, York, and Kaliyev were picked before my #15 pick so Newhook was there. I went with highest rated players in Broberg at #21 and Dorofeyev at #27. I wanted to trade the #21 pick but no one asked. Seider was on the board at #21 so I'll always compare those two in my mind but I went with the ratings. I traded a future pick to get Holmstrom at pick #38. I love those kind of risky picks. If his injury issues are behind him, that will be great value at #38. Several of my opponents groaned when I took Rees at pick #51 so that's always a good sign. Johnson had a higher rating than #53 and Firstov is just a gamble on a young, toolsy winger. If Johnson and Firstov spend a couple years in college I can get a good look before deciding to roster them or not.

Overall, I am happy with the top of my draft but not crazy about the second half of the draft. Hughes, Zegras, Pods, and Newhook is a helluva haul and completes my retool. Took a couple gambles in the bottom half of my draft. Maybe I get lucky.
My fear of taking Broberg over Seider have come to fruition. At least I was able to package Broberg and last year's 7OA (Gauthier) for Luke Hughes which I view as a win. Dorofeyev might turn into something from pick 27. Was hoping for more from Newhook and Podkolzin but they still have some time. While I still like the Zegras pick it is not as much of a steal as I thought it was. Pinto would have been a good pick in the 5th since my 3 picks are all gone from my roster.

One thing I have realized from looking back at the 10 years or so of my entry draft picks is that very few of the 3rd to 5th round picks ever amount to anything. For as much time as I analyze and scrutinize prospects before making a pick, most of the time none of the players become difference-makers. I probably have found just as many good players that I picked up as free agents as I did from late round picks. Maybe a better philosophy would be to trade 3rd to 5th round picks for depth players and continually scan unrostered prospects for the diamonds in the rough. Granted, it is a lot of fun to draft prospects and follow their development.

    Very well said.
Guys like Rees and Ryan Johnson were both top32 players from a few analysts that year.
    Yeah... it's hard.

I can say that I've definitely not seen a regular fantasy GM or an NHL-team that has "significantly greater success" than others at late round (3rd-onwards) picks.
It's dart throwing time from pick #50-onward.

Boldy is a huge hit... but... lucky he fell to you. 11 was about as late as he was going that year in fantasy leagues.
Somebody missed on their drafting for him to get to you.
More commonly he went 7-10 range.

    Kochetkov is a big hit.

The others are TBD or misses.

    Dorofeyev, we'll see.
Hard to nose your way into a Stanley Cup lineup.

Honka is buried in CAR... he'll have a hard time getting minutes with a veteran CAR D-core this year or next.
He still has upside, doing OK in their AHL.

Puistola at 39 was all the rage that year.
I've remarked on him - people were gaga over him in the forums.
He went #74 in the NHL draft.
He does NOT have an NHL contract right now.
CAR had no faith he'd sign with them, so they moved him in the Puljujarvi trade with EDM.
EDM couldn't or didn't sign him. What's this say?
He did... FINALLY... have a good season in Liiga.
I think he'd have to be considered a BUST as a draft pick though, at this point.
    (No backpatting allowed there!)
