And was barely playing in the playoffs for the Jets. YIKES.

But I also did not realize how far below the cap floor they were prior to this and the Niskanen deal.

This is the best comment I’ve read on these boards in some time.

Fletcher would have been better off waiting until July 1st and offer Duchene $9.5M in my opinion.

I was worried that the Flyers were going to get really good. That feeling is passing now.

    Fletcher being Fletcher.
    I should trademark that...

Or Chuck being Chucky...And use this as the trademark logo....but toss a Flyers Jersey on instead....

This deal just stinks of Fletcher not being able to deal with the loss of his 5th round pick that he traded. He needed to write off that 5th round pick as soon as he made the deal. He did not have to sign Hayes just because he gave up a pick to obtain his rights.

Fletcher would have gained a lot more respect if he let Hayes walk after giving up the 5th round pick if 7.14 AAV was his asking price.

Flyers fans better hope the 'big man theory' is spot on with Hayes.

    6'5" 381gp. 19/20 could/should be his breakout year.

    Still 7.14 x 7yrs... my god.. that's a lot of cake

What's super funny (in a really sad way)... is that there is one contract the Flyers will still be paying out for farther out (2027) than end-of-Hayes contract (2026)?
    And that would be...
Everybody's favourite reminder of how great Flyer contract management has been...

I know it seems ridiculous. And I’m not saying it’s not. But stastny got signed for $6.5 mill and he had only topped 50 points once in the previous 4 seasons. Sure his contract was only 3 seasons. But he is 6 years older than Hayes.

So it’s crazy. But not super duper crazy though

That was a crazy contract last year too... Stastny hit FA at the right time twice. The market was depleted of #1, #2 C's both times he was a UFA... resulted in bidding wars.

Three years vs six years is a big difference. The term is the problem.

6 would be fractionally more palatable, pretty sure it’s 7.
