The insane thing is that there are some who defend the contract and say it isn't all that bad compared to some previous contracts that were signed. Comparably-speaking, maybe that is true, but comparing one bad contract to another bad contract doesn't really change my opinion.

Others are saying "that's the market now" for a 50 pt, 2nd line center. To that, I say the market is broken. If NHL teams now have no choice but to pay 50 point, 2nd line players the kind of money Hayes just got (and in all honesty I don't even think Hayes is a true 2nd line player), then no wonder so many teams are in cap trouble.
    12 team, H2H, salary cap
    1 pt/G or A, 2 pts/W, 1 pt/OTL, 1 pt/SO

    Forward: B. Point, M. Necas, A. Debrincat, T. Zegras, J. Bratt, L. Raymond
    Defense: J. Morrissey, A. DeAngelo, S. Gostisbehere, D. Doughty
    Goalie: T. Demko, E. Merzlikins
    Bench: M. Rossi, C. Glass, M. Maccelli, M. Dumba, K. Shattenkirk, F. Andersen
Prospects of Note: L. Stankoven, J. Lekkerimaki, D. Yurov, B. Clarke

League has been running continuously since 1997-98

For everyone that thinks 'that's the market now' is a legit response. They need to take a look at history. What was the market for Phaneuf or Bryzgalov when they signed their contracts... it probably was a similar situation... and now look at them... bought out of their contracts.

The market is broken. It's been broken since like 1997. It's called unrestricted free agency.

    "Unrestricted" means unrestricted stupidity.

    ELC years = GM friendly
RFA years = Even. Kinda moving towards player friendly. But after this yrs wave of RFAs, it'll go back to normal due to cap restrictions.
    UFA years = Player friendly

Horrible long-term contract by the Flyers. That said, if the Flyers add another legit W via UFA/trade--and team chemistry is good--the Flyers have a sneakily 2-year window to contend in the East if some powerhouses get outed early in the playoffs again.

    Provorov - Niskanen
    Gostisbehere - Braun
    Sanheim - Myers
    Hagg

    Hart

... is the best D and G on paper the Flyers have had in a very long time. Adding Hayes brings another 50-60 points to the party--and let's just say they are able to acquire Zucker--they will have added another quick, reliable scorer capable of netting 25-30 goals.

    Giroux - Couturier - Voracek
    JVR - Hayes - Zucker
    Lindblom - Patrick - Konecny
    Raffl - Laughton - Hartman

... is a very deep F core with 3 capable scoring lines and multiple, big, two-way centermen for playoff wars.

With an experienced coaching staff--and players fired up to prove their worth--this is a very solid roster the Flyers will be icing in October.

I wouldn't mind the term and $ if he didn't get a NMC. He could have been dangled as bait for Seattle if the contract was going south

The Flyers recent GM's, excluding Hextall, have been able to have unrestricted stupidity in lots of ways beyond unrestricted free agency. Fletcher is just the latest one.

Wait for the deal shipping out Patrick & 1-2 more defensemen for something not good.

So I guess this is an acknowledgement from Philly that Nolan will never pan out, otherwise why pay your future 3rd line center 7x7?

I don’t see it as a lack of confidence that Patrick can become a solid player.

To me it’s a YOLO type thing. Let’s get a piece out team could use now, future issues be damned.

I won’t deny that at this moment the Flyers are better with Hayes as the second line C than Patrick but when GMs come into a team expecting to quickly build a winner there will be very very poor choices made.

There are worse problems to have than playing 3 top notch C’s if and when Patrick reaches that zone.

Weren't we right for the first 50 games of the season? It's a long contract. I wouldn't make a determination one way or the other over such a short span of it. Didn't Brad Richards look decent to good in his first year as a Ranger?

The term is the killer, not the AAV. Judging a 7-year deal after 60 games is the same short-term mindset that gets GMs in trouble to begin with.

ya, not the current's GM problem if it doesn't work out I guess.

But the last 20 games he's done well. Interesting to see if it carries over the next 18-ish games or whatever is left in the season. And if they make the playoffs.

I still dont like the term it the AVV. He has had a solid year in Philly and has fit in well, but I still think the contract is fugly.

I'm still on board with this being an overpay in terms of dollars and term, but am not surprised he's fit in well. He'll likely be a solid player for the first 3-4 years of the deal, but it is a help that he's had to play up the lineup with Patrick out.

Once Braun & his contract go away (I desperately hope he isn't re-signed) there will be more room. The Braun deal was the terrible offseason deal - picks for a guy someone was trying to salary dump.
