I don’t think Jets fans will be happy with the immediate return but they have to remember they were probably gonna lose him for nothing.
All of us Sami Niku believers kick the garbage bin.
He's a RFA... worst case scenario would be Nylander + a day... And then trade him. They always would have gotten something for him.

I disagree..
Trouba >>>> Pionk -- especially offensively.
If anything, I think this opens the door for him a bit.

I wonder how Adam Fox feels right about now......

Just when TonyD was making an impression.
Too bad on this but it was going to happen. Trouba just didn't like Canada. Too bad as the Jets were a really good situation for him, especially with Byfuglien slowing down over the next few years.
Getting their 1st back and a useful D with #3-4 upside is a pretty good return. A bit more would have been nicer but you can't have everything. The Jets still need a real look at their D.
? - Byfuglien
Morrissey -Pionk
Niku-?
for god's sake trade Kulikov
Can they afford to resign Myers now? Or maybe they go after Edler on July 1

Pionk is an excellent skater and has his head up with the pill on his stick.
His issue is being muscled off the puck.
Overall he can play the game at the NHL level, is affordable and knows when to jump into the play.
The pick isn't too shabby a return considering the Jets rolled the dice on Hayes at the deadline.
A few thoughts on NY
Fox hasn't done anything yet so is looking at fighting for a roster spot. Remember the conditional pick is based on NHL games played for Fox. We need to see how he fits into the system for coach Quinn and in the big city. Plenty of other guys haven't made the transition so I think the book isn't written on Fox yet. His bar to entry just got raised.
DeAngelo had serious issues with staying in the lineup. The code from the Rangers was that he was having "maturity" issues. Once he got the message and started playing the way coach Quinn wanted his game really started to turn around. The kid has moxy and a great right hand. Just ask Okposo who collapsed after getting his bell rung by Tony. I think he is competing with Shattenkirk for the 2nd pairing.
My hunch is we see Skjei and Trouba on the top pairing.
2nd pairing LD is open for the guy who best fits the mold. Maybe NY puts a righty there but Tony D & Shat both scratch the same itch.
Staal plays on the 3rd pairing. with whomever loses the 2nd pairing battle.
That leaves 1 slot open. Ideally a guy who thinks defense first, seals off the side of the net and can clear the crease. Or does NY go with an uptempo lineup and plays another puck mover.
Is that guy in house ? There are a few names to consider including Fox, Hajek, Claesson, Rykov, Lindgren & Reunanen
Then there is Brendan Smith as well.
Its a good problem to have for a team that was/is in dire need of a defensive upgrade.
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
Unbelievable. The NYR <--> WPG trades boil down to Kevin Hayes & Pionk for Trouba & Lemieux. Gorton is staking an early claim to GM of the Year.
