One would assume team doctors have assured the Sharks there's no long term concern over his current injuries.

Pretty much spells the end to Pavelski in SJ. Perhaps Jumbo comes back @ 1m - 1yr.

So San Jose is blowing about a quarter of their team cap for 2 D that dont really play defense all that well.

This wont work. They dont have a good enough G for this to work. Do they have the team speed to play run and gun?

Seems like they wont be able to sign Pavelski now unless he takes a discount. Perhaps that has already been worked out.

I mean I'm not surprised at all. You do everything you can to keep superstars and Karlsson is still exactly that.

I'm not going let the season he just played on one leg fool me. I do think that San Jose is focused on playoffs only, and they will do everything they can to get Karlsson there healthy, so probably a bit more rest than fantasy owners would like.

The biggest hole is their goaltending. They need to address that no doubt but not by letting Karlsson walk if he's willing to sign. They need to find another way.

This team is setup to be a consistent playoff team for years and they'll be a tough out for anyone.

Everyone is saying that this spells the end to Pavelski?

I think the two sides can come together and get a deal done that makes sense. I think they got to try and sign their captain and think Little Joe wants to stay there and try for a cup.

It still doesn’t make the trade a good one for Ottawa, but the Sens now receive another 2nd in 2021 from SJ. They have a huge stockpile and if there is one thing they are good at, it is drafting.

Sens fans are now also hoping for Columbus to re-sign Duchene for another 1st.

No argument about Karlsson being a superstar, but sometimes a team needs something else to succeed.

For example, if St. Louis had hypothetically traded Binnington and O'Reilly for Connor McDavid, I don't think they would have won the cup

I kind of feel the same way about san jose signing Karlsson. i think he's a good player who will help the team, but that cap space could be used in an even better way

What is not to like about signing Erik Karlsson to play for your team? I mean, come on! Nice move Sharks! This move does have some risk but it also has the possibility for massive reward.

This issue is now how to fit the other pieces. That issue is not on Karlsson.

GMDW will have to move some pieces and/or make some hard decisions, but that is what he is paid to do. If that means letting Pavelski and Thornton walk, then so be it. If it means trading Kane, then so be it. If it means trading one (or both) of Braun or Dillon, then so be it.

EDIT: I fully agree that GMDW is potentially creating a future cap-nightmare with all of his long-term contracts. My main point is that adding an Erik Karlsson to your (any) team is probably a damn good move.

    I'll take that bet...

Vegas, Calgary and ____ (who?) will push them into a wild-card battle?

I just don't see a 3rd team pushing SJ, or Cgy out of one of the divisional spots. Actually, I think Cgy regresses more than SJ does.

Arizona, Van, Edmonton will all have a shot. San Jose just shot themselves in the foot regarding scoring depth and a goaltending upgrade. Name your stakes and we’ll revisit it at the end of the season!

I can see an argument for Arz. and even Edm.... but Van... man... Edler's gone, Schenn is gone. That leaves them with a top 5D of
    Hutton (who could be traded)
    Stecher,
    Tanev (for 45 games)
Hughes - who should get sheltered minutes
    Biega
Brisbois - who could really use another AHL season.

None of those crack SJ's top 4.

I could rant about their forwards as well, but they only have 3 top 6 forwards - Horvat, Pettersson, Boeser.
There are others that play in the top six, but are better suited for 3rd/4th line/AHL

Only reason they were even 'close' to a wild card spot is due to the pt total required to make the playoffs dropping by several points from the previous season

No way they sign this contract without the captain on-board. The core will remain for one or two more runs. Today is today’s problem and tomorrow is tomorrow’s. Fans have short memories. Gotta go for it if you have Karlsson in the fold.

The main reasons threw Vancouver in there are the goaltending quality (potentially), those three names you mentioned, and the fact that they have $30mil in cap space with 20 players signed to Sam Jose’s $12 mil with 16 players sighed...
