Interesting deal. Probably better for Gudas' fantasy value. Niskanen's PP time probably goes to who? Orlov?

I don't understand this one from Washington's POV. Does their cap situation suck this much?

Washington gets a bit tougher and saves some cap space. Having Gudas and Wilson will make them even more nasty to play against.

Philly gets the better dman and hopefully a better playing partner for Gostisbehere.

I think this helps Orlov (he will get more PP time), and it could help Gostisbehere, if he does play with Niskanen.

Yeah I get the toughness aspect but... at what cost?

    This screams cap dump.

Great compliment to Sanheim, not entirely sure they should pair them together as Prov and Ghost would be together then. Think the flyers take the L in this trade because of the retaining salary, surprised they couldn't get a better return with the salary retention

Guessing you didn't watch a lot of Caps games last season. Niskanen has been trending down the last couple of seasons and last year he was pretty bad. Caps have Jensen and Kempny for 2.5M each, add in Carlson and Orlov and they really do not need Niskanen any more. Gudas has 1 year remaining and Niskanen has 2.

It is a cap dump but also getting rid of a depreciating asset

I don't get this trade at all from a PHI perspective... well, I have two theories I'll get to in a bit.

    For WAS, it makes sense:
    1. Gudas has a low salary & is UFA in 2020. They are just clearing cap space to pay some guys.
    2. Niskanen didn't really do well with Orlov. The pairing gave up too many shots, Niskanen was -151 and Orlov was -85 at 5-on-5. They have to try somebody else with Orlov long-term.

So... for PHI... what are they even getting?
They take on more money, more length, and get a past-his-prime player that is trending down.

IDK - so here's my theories:
    1. Chuck Fletcher is throwing shit at the wall to "seem active"... because that is suggestive to the idiot PHI owner reps that "something is happening".
    2. Radko chewed out somebody in his exit interview. *Sometimes... I think a player has just had enough with an organization and probably lips them off.*

I actually like Radko. But I liked Hakstol & Hextall as well.
It wouldn't surprise me if Radko told the PHI brass off.

For me, this was just a stupid, stupid move by Philly... so stupid it suggests it wasn't a hockey-trade.
Niskanen simply doesn't make them a better club, short or long-term.

I'm with you on that one...
Add in the fact this was to a Division rival
& they helped Wsh out more by eating 30% of Gudas salary...
one would think they'd have acquired a pick or something to take on Niskanen.

They now have 10.75m tied up in Niskanen & MacDonald for 19/20.

Makes no sense for the Flyers to retain money while trading for the higher paid, and declining, player and not have another asset coming back. 3 years ago I could understand but at this time it looks simply foolish. Good job by the Caps.
