AAV is pretty standard. I haven't been in a league yet where the 1st overall pick isn't around $3.775M. Their cap hit would be $925k.

So in your experience AAV is more common than cap hit? Interesting.

I could be wrong but everyone talks AAV and I've been in leagues that manually converted cap hits to AAV on Fantrax. I've never done a cap hit league.

Personally I find $925k for rookies is an excessive discount considering the league average salary is around $3M.

I don't disagree, but there are quite a few leagues I know of that use Cap hit and not AAV. It just seems like the easier way to go.

Leagues I've heard of are Salary, which means a players value can fluctuate from a year to another within the same contract. Other than that, I know a friend who uses salary cap. Never heard of leagues using the bonuses. Jack Hughes is .925 AFAIK for everybody I know of.

    WHL uses cap hit.

There's two (highly) beneficial reasons for this:
    1. The teams that land the high-end rookies are usually bottom-finishers. Give them every break you can, so having elite rookies at $925k - this is actually better asset value (than AAV) for rebuilding teams.
    2. League-wide cap hit is more dependably calculated AND understood. We know what NHL max cap is... we know how many teams there are. So people can discuss that and feel educated about what they know/understand.

We were discussing our "cap" in WHL this year.
It is currently at $100m for 25players... which is $4m average (cap) per player in our fantasy league.
Is that enough? some people asked.

Well, NHL cap is $81.5m... and most NHL teams probably will have about $80m in cap, for 23 players on roster.
That's $3.5m average (cap) per player in NHL.

So yes, we quickly know that we are allotting a little extra per player than the NHL.
This makes for a very clear communication of where our fantasy league stands relative to the NHL for cap hit allocation.

We also know that our league is going to want to roster the higher (maybe overpaid) players... and that offsets well with also rostering the lower rookies at their $925k (or lower) vs. what AAV would be.

AAV can be done... a league will eventually learn it.
But cap hit is better for rebuilding & league parity and easier for a league to generally discuss and plan around.

Generally, I think "Cap Hit" is/should be the more popular salary league metric... because it is simpler for GMs to understand & better for league parity.

Some good points made. Thanks for the input!

Congrats. Now be prepared for the onslaught of questions. Great decision removing goalies, as it'd be basically impossible to combine them.

I think you want to toss in a note about how you ranked the guys who currently have a $0 salary, as many likely don't know you have a salary projection model.

Have you seen me on the forums? I live on questions!

Fair point, tomorrow's Capped article should cover a lot of it.
