    Default Best Buyout Option

In my league, we get one free buyout. Buyouts after that are 25% cap hit for the remainder of the contract years.

Who is the best free buyout and who else would be worth a buyout after that and take the cap hit?

    Thank you in advance!

    Lundqvist - 2years left @ 8,500,000
    Shattenkirk - 2 years left @ 6,665,000
    Okposo - 4years left @ 6,000,000
    Tanev - 1 year left @ 4,450,000
    Cole - 2 years left @ 4,250,000

    Scoring is as follows:

    Plus/Minus (+/-) 1
    Power Play Points (PPP) 1

This is really tough to answer because the buy-out candidates will largely depend on your positional depth.

For instance, you shouldn't consider buying out Lundqvist (even though his contract is the highest on your list), unless you have enough depth at the position to cover off losing him (or if you confident you can replace him in the draft).

That said, without knowing more details, the player that jumps out at me is Okposo partially because of the length of that contract. If you can buy him out without penalty and free yourself of that contract for the next 4 year, that is mighty appealing.

I am up against the cap most likely.

We start two(2) goalies per day.

I have the following other goalies that are or could be fantasy relevant next year:

    Lehner
    Rask
    Binnington
    Nedeljkovic

Lehner and Binnington are going to get huge raises, hence why i need to shed some space. Lundqvist is expendable in my opinion.

Knowing this, Lundqvist is the guy I'd buy out. You will be absolutely fine with Lehner, Binnington, and Rask. Binnington might not get a huge raise. I can only hope that St. Louis has learned from the Allen mistake not to sign Binnington to a long-term deal until they have seen him play more. A bridge deal is in order, I feel.

I would use my free buyout on Okposo. It’s a hideous contract and 4yrs off the books for free sounds like a getbout of jail free card. I’d also look to trade Lundy and if there are no takers I’d pay the 25% for 2yrs. Another road you could go is buying out Lundy this year and Okposo next year. That Okposo deal is an anchor due to length.

Is this a one-time free buy-out or do you get one of these every year? If it's one time only, I'd do Okposo. If you have an annual free buy-out, I'd do it on Hank.

It is annual. One free buyout per year.

als_revenge has the right idea. Buy out Lundy this year (You're set at G) and buy out Okposo next year.

I also wouldn't be opposed to using your other buyout on Okposo this year if you think you can swallow the $1.5mil in dead cap for 4 years. Especially if you think that extra $4.5 mil this season could be the difference in a championship or not.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

just jumping back in to say that I agree with this. Lundqvist is not required, as I already mentioned above, so he'd be my first choice. However, if you can afford to absorb the penalty, I'd buy him out this year as my #2 option, and buy out Okposo as my #1 option.

I really think you might be able to get something for Lundqvist. It may not be much, maybe a less bad contract at a position where they are overfull and need to do something, but I'd look to make a positionally astute bad contract swap.

Okposo is an ugly contract. It's 4 years, and he's a far less scarce position than goalie. He's my free buyout.

Shattenkirk is only a 2 year deal, and he's only a bit more than Okposo. I'd keep him over Okposo by far. He scored 1 point less, is better at peripherals, and is a defenseman. So it's better to keep him on player quality, positional scarcity, and contract length.

Tanev has 1 year deal, and is cheaper, but there's no cap hit beyond this year if you do the 25%? I suspect he's not close to worth his contract, I'd do that as an additional one.

Cole is actually very solid with peripherals, and considering how much you can save with Tanev & Okposo, I think you'd likely be okay keeping him, but you might either find a taker in trade, or a buyout wouldn't be too bad if needed.
