$2.6M is still more than you want or need to pay a backup goalie in my opinion. Halak and Khudobin were good for their teams, but I still think it's a little much.

That is unless they expect him to start 35 this year and 50 next year when Anderson retires.

I'm fine with the deal. Salaries are on the rise and this locks up the team's post-Anderson vet goalie.

In cap leagues he becomes complete garbage though.

When I look around the league and see how many goalies could be in the NHL at $1 million or less, especially on a bad team like Ottawa as the backup, I wonder why doesn't the $2 million get spent elsewhere where it could be a lot more useful?

They'll have the space, and Ottawa is gonna need to overpay any FA to get them to stay/go to Ottawa.

Bu why not save the space, take a cap dump like Eriksson instead (and get pieces for it), then see what you have with your young guys like Hogberg, Daccord, Gustavsson, etc.

They have like 35mill in cap space. And then like 9.4mill in IR, which would turn into LTIR when the season starts. So really like 44mill in space.

And I'm not tossing a young goalie behind that mess.

I figure the 35M doesn't tell the whole story. Their internal budget is what will cap them the next few seasons. They don't have 35M in cap space against that, so the 2M comes as a bigger piece of the pie taking that into consideration.

As for tossing a young goalie out there, they did it with Daccord at the end of last season for a game. It doesn't have to be all year. Rotate four goalies through the backup spot for the year, and they each get 7 games. Enough to get a comfort level, but not enough to destroy them. Also there's always guys like Pickard, McElhinney, etc on waivers, or Reimer that Florida will likely be trying to dump.

I really think the idea was if they don't re-sign him, they might not get anyone. And Anderson/Condon are in their last yr of their deals. So Nilsson also helps next yr.

Honestly think it was just a "Might as well get the guy who kinda wants to be here"

There is quite the log-jam in net for Ottawa and Belleville with this signing. I didn't expect Nilsson to re-sign. Condon is also signed this year, so depending on his hip that's another possible back-up goalie.

With Daccord and Gustavsson signed, I can see Hogberg heading back to Sweden as he's a RFA this summer.

I completely forgot Condon was even there...
Does OTT think that one of their three goalies can play defence to prevent more goals?

They need the help if they're paying almost 10M for three below average goalies!

Buyout potential for Anderson? Thinking of moving him?

Buyout is a 1.3333mill hit for 2019-20 and 2020-21 season. Doesn't reaaalllyyy make sense to buy him out though. He's like their only vet/face of the franchise that isn't young. What his wife and him do in the community is a lot, so unless he wants to move, why would they buy him out. Just talked myself out of that idea.

Anderson is 35+ so there's no buyout benefit besides removing him from your team, paying him less, but there's no cap benefit...Sounds very Ottawa friendly...
