Default Yamamoto or the #17 in the 2019 prospect draft

    Hey guys,

I've been offered Kailer Yamamoto in exchange for my #17 overall and Kyle Capobianco. It's a 28 team, pts only, keep 9 (10 if you are non-playoff) and I am in year 2 of my rebuild/turnaround. Currently have picks #5, #9, and 17 in the first rd. Yama is a prospect which means he costs $1 against the salary cap and must be activated after 82 games. Capo was a waiver wire addition so must be treated as a keeper.

My list has me landing one of the following players at 17: Pelletier, Brink, Dorofeyev, or Tomasino. Brink or Tomasino are the two players I'd really like to snag.

I also have Bouchard and Benson marinating on the farm.

The question is whether Yama could still be an elite asset or not. I'm not really opposed to having the three prospects from Edmonton (despite their seeming inability to develop players in the AHL) but I'm having a hard time deciding whether the player I want at 17 seems more attractive because of recency bias or not. Is there still space for us to consider Yamamoto a potential top six winger with upside or am I better holding tight with one of the players mentioned above.

    Will rep as I can.

    Cheers

I actually don’t like adding Capobianco to it tbh as I have him as a sneaky good prospect own

Yeah, I'm not crazy about moving him either but I don't know that he's worth keeping in a keep 10 scenario in this league. Unless he recovers quickly from ACL surgery and starts to make an impact in 2019-2020 he won't fit into my long term plans, especially when I make the playoffs and can only keep 9.

I’d keep 17 - May even find its worth more when FOMO kicks in

Unless there is a big run on defensemen, I could easily see Brink and possibly Tomasino going earlier than 17. I'd take Yamamoto here. The kid has a ton of talent and is very young. He'll be given every opportunity to contribute and be impactful to the Oilers.

I'd take Yama too; I believe his upside is higher than what you'll get at 17 and wait time shorter.

I'd also take Yamamoto. Whomever is picked at 17 may turn out to be a good player, but Yamamoto has all the tools to be a top 6 player AND he's much closer to getting a spot in the NHL than pick 17 will be.

I'm not expecting a big year for Yamamoto but its not a crazy thought either. I think the plan is to let him develop more in the minors and call him up as needed but who knows. More time in the AHL is not a bad thing for him. Certainly Holland's modus operandi when it comes to younger players, which isn't a bad thing.

That's been my hope as well - a calming influence at the helm. Some marination in the AHL and a gathering of confidence, followed by a full time callup and production. Thanks for the input!

I would rather have Yamamoto than pick 17 in this year's draft but I would rather have 17 and Capobianco than Yamamoto. Capobianco is greatly underrated as a prospect.
