$6 million a year for a 25 goal, 25 assist 2nd line center. I guess that's the going rate, but players like Point and Aho are loving this.

Hard to see him playing well enough to justify the price, although I think it's not an awful contract by any stretch

apparently Trotz likes him... possible he would have gotten more on the open market.

Should have been $5 AAV.
The result of having a lot of cap space, and not many top end players likely willing to go to NYI over other options.

refreshing to see someone stick around the island who I thought was 50/50 to stay/go ; especially with just 40ish days til ufa .
he could have gotten 7x7 as ufa imo
If he can keep doing what he did in 2018-19 then he'll be worth it, but that's a big 'if'. I'm glad I traded him away.
Welp, Isles just finished paying Eberle $6m for 37pts... so this is a steal for them!!!
I agree with others, I think $5m per would've been better number, but I think this is more a reflection of there just not being much better on the free market come July.
I'm just not crazy about the money/term combo when his career-high before this year was 45. It's not terrible though. We're going to see plenty of "terrible" from teams on July 1st.

No doubt about it. And I do think he'd have gotten more if he hit the market, which is just insane . Teams always overpay on July 1.
Nelson is a useful player, and the Islanders are nowhere near cap trouble (yet). However, this deal will come back to haunt them. With Nelson signed to this deal, Lee is going to get so much more money (likely $8 million a year). Then add in Lehner's new deal ($6-$7 million a year, if they re-sign him). Next year when Barzal's ELC is up, he'll be looking at Nelson and Lee's contracts and want $12-13 million a year. All of a sudden they are in cap trouble, even though they're still a team with nothing dangerous in their top 6 outside of Barzal.

It's not a bad signing. He's got size and skill, he performed well enough in the playoffs, and he plays 18-20-ish minutes per game. I think $5.75M would have been just right, so $6M to lock up a bunch of UFA prime years is within reason.
