Ok so a couple of the quirkier rules:

    - A soft trade deadline and a hard one. Basically it's unlimited trades until the actual NHL trade deadline- which is the soft deadline. Then after that when we know where all the dominoes have fallen you have ten days to make one more trade. Not my idea but loved it when I read it.

    - Very limited FA moves. Two. That's right two. So keep in mind you are cultivating a deep farm and junior system and those moves don't count against this. It's specifically for adding off the wire. Between puck drop and the start of playoffs you can add players twice. You still have to adhere to roster limits meaning a player has to be dropped or mover to ir ir+. That might sound strict but these are "over and above" adds in tandem with...

    - A mid year three round supplemental draft. Over the all star break we basically draft through 4 add/drops. Nobody is required to participate. You can skip your supplemental drafts, trade them or whatever but by mid season it gives you a chance to tweak your roster. And also...

    - A playoff tweak draft- one and done. Basically a one round add/drop draft right before playoffs. Gives a hail Mary chance to contenders with an injury to gamble on a short term bloated contract but also gives re-building teams a chance to snag a darkhorse for next year before the hype machine starts.

    - Lastly after playoffs every team is allowed a "summer waiver add". We will do 3 rounds of farm draft every year and 6 rounds of the entry draft but this gives savvy owners ONE chance every summer to add a verroneau, mikheyev or kaski before the free agency hype on a first come first serve basis. You can only add one player like this each off season so there's a certain amount of strategy when to use it. Like all moves you still have to adhere to roster limits.

    - Weighted draft lottery based on a "loser bracket". Will post the exact details when I can see fanyrax specific settings but basically the non playoff teams would compete in a loser bracket with extra lottery balls awarded to the winner- so "straight tanking" is less effective.

    - Last "quirky" idea and this one may be put to a vote as I am not as sure of it as I am of the others: Tagging a "Franchise Player". My thoughts were that this player is untradeable and undroppable but the reward is that you only have to cover half his salary. My thinking was to allow one franchise player switch over the CBA period of five years with the stipulation that you're on the hook for 75 percent of the new players salary. After that your out of luck. I think this would be a perfect issue for the league committee to discuss and make a ruling on.

Anyways- I should have this stuff posted by mid week next week on an independent site but I wanted to post here as this ad has gotten a fair share of attention. Hopefully this garners more interest. Please email me if you're interested and especially interested in players who want to be in the league committee and/or wrote articles! Anyways email me up- cheers!!!

Ok a few edits while I work on the other site.

The biggest thing is scoring cats. I admit I had given this the least amount of thought and got some healthy questioning about it. After careful consideration I have a tentavive sketch Id like to submit.

    Full point categories
    G A P PPP Sogs

    1/2 Point categories
Pims, Hits, Fow, Takeways OR Blocked Shots

BS or Takeways discussion- Im pretty solidly against blocked shots. They feel a lot like plus minus to me with a fair chunk being team dependent and a fair chunk being pretty arbitrary. If you look at the top ten guys you have some defensive stalwarts (Hjamaallarson, Edler), youve got some offensive guys (Carlson), youve got some lunatics (Russell, and youve giot some guys just trying to stay alive in the NHL by any means possible (Cole, Seabrook). My argument is those arent guys I want to roster. Downgrading the stat to half a point makes it more palletable helps as they can be helpful without being "must own". This is a cap league and the bulk of salaries are paid out for scoring with things kllike hits, blocked shots being "nice bonuses". I want the scoring to reflect that. I really think takeaways is a better defensive metric as the top ten is a veritable "whose who" of selke candidates and defensive stalwarts. That being said takeaways is not without its blemishes. The one nice thing about blocked shots is that it added a counting stat that dmen were bigger contributors towards. Takeaways has 3 dmen in the top 10 last year. Even more troublesome is that its another stat that McDavid blows off the dorr hinges which just serves to add more of a bias towards whoever gets him. That being said I think its a much better representation of defensive acumen.

So we can vote on Takeaways OR Blocked Shots OR even Both

Its open to debate/change but for now I have included Takeaways instead of blocked shots as it lends some uniqueness to our player valuations and better represents defensive acumen.

In terms of our philosiphical exercise Im weighing 1/2 the sogs category towards "scoring" and 1/2 the sog category towards "Bangers and Mash"
    So...

G A P PP Sogs (1/2)- Are all weighted as a full point with 1/2 of sogs towards scoring= 4 1/2 Scoring Points
Pim Hits Fow Takeways Sogs (1/2)- Are all weighted at 1/2 a point which equals 2 1/2 Banger and Mash Points

Thats a ratio I can live with. It ensures scorers who bring other elenments have added value. It also allows peripeheral specialists at the bottom of your roster without them outweighing scorers on an even footing. I think its great that Faksa can be rostered- but I dont want a format where hes worth as much as DeBrincat. I think in a salary league especially using NHL salaries points should matter heavily for player value as thats a big chunk of what your paying for in the actual NHL as well.

Which brings us to goalie categories. I believe dropping "Losses" as a category and weighing SO's at half a point solves a lot of problems nin terms of skater/goalie impact. I think managing a solid stable of goalies is important but I also dont think you should win half the league by drafting Vasilevkiy 4th overall. Also I think SO's as a half point category is neat as it ends up more as a tie breaker than as stat youre actively trying to roster. Ill also mention here that I borrowed the idera of saves over save percentage because I hate the idea of "minimizing your goalie starts" to get quality numbers. Having saves incentivizes getting as many starts as you possibly can which I think is a good thing. I enjoy a league where its better tyo have 4-5 goalies even backups and 1bs over just the "fire and forget" method of just drafting two workhorses.

    So were left with-
W, Saves, GAA, and SO (1/2 point)

Thats 7 skater cats to 3 and a half goalie cats. Again I can live with that.

Other than voting on Blocked shots, Takeaways, or both (whioch would lead to a 7 1/2 to 3 1/2 split-again not too shabby)- I think these scoring cats and ratios are much better than the first draft I posted. The goal is to reward peripheral categories in a meaningful way without making specialists that would otherwise go unowned as "must own". Im hoping this is a happy medium.

Does anyone knopw a free forum or board to setup a league in the off season? I want to have that set up by wednesday. If anyone else has seen this and wants to join please email me at: [email protected]

    Two more quick updates:

    - I think we are just going to scrap the franchise player rule. The McDavids of the world already skew values in pools and this does feel like just another way to reward owners of super super stars. We might also have a vote to reduce our salary cap to 35 over the NHL floor.

    - Thematically- I had an idea to use places from fantasy literature as our team names. Remember we need to be able to get THREE different team names for the main squad, farm team, and team. Could use LOTR, GOT, Harry Potter. I thought it makes sense as were looking for aspiring wtriters and people not afraid to do a bit of fantasy hockey RP :P. For example The Mordor Menace- could describe the president of hockey ops as "The eye" GM as Sauromon or his apprentice or something, maybe the head coach os Krug the Orc Taskmaster? I dont know if thats too cheesy for some but I thought itd be a neat angle especially when writing articles and what not which is going to be a focus in this league....

    Heres the board so far:

    http://fantasysquaredhockey.freeforums.net/

Ill be going through my inbox which is flooded at, :P to make sure I send out individual invitations. So far the response and feedback has been great. I think were- pretty easily in the 4-6 manager range without sending out a lot of personal invitations at this point- pretty stoked!ill have more time tommorow to log on and get those out. feel free to peruse in the meantime and if anyone involved so far knows of managers/owners from different leagues that might be interested in this one, posess the depth of player knowledge, and would be a fun, active asset- feel free to forward this link. No final decisions will be made until theyre properly vetted but its a great chance to browse the format and rules in the interim. Cheers!
