Nonetheless, a very entertaining thread with all sorts of diversions and sub plots.
Kudos to Deep Throat...I mean Skippy.
I heard they actually have to give Matthews with Marner just so a team will take Marner.

I have a good source telling me Marner is so fed up with Babcock that he is looking at dual citizenship options. He wants to avoid playing for Canada in the Olympics just in case Babcock would be the coach. I think his great aunt's second husband has Finnish citizenship, so he's looking into that avenue as a possibility.

I chimed in a bit earlier, but I will mention this again...
I wouldn't have gone so far as to say, like Skippy does, that an offer sheet is definitely going to happen. However, I have a personal connection to the Marner family (a close relative of mine is good friends with Marner's father) and I have been told that there is certainly a rift between Marner and Babcock. Obviously I have only heard this third hand (Marner to his dad, his dad to my relative, my relative to me), so perhaps there is some exaggeration happening here. I will admit that Marner's father seems like a bit of a hot head based on some of his interactions/conversations with the media. I've also been told that Marner fully expects to get paid full value and will not take any sort of discount on his next contract. His camp feels strongly that he is just as valuable to the Leafs as Matthews and should be paid accordingly.
That said, I haven't personally heard anything about an offer sheet, but I can say (FWIW) that there is some discontent between Marner and Babcock and the contract negotiations may not go very smoothly, in part because of that. I don't really know if any of that qualifies as "insider knowledge". None of this is terribly revealing, tbh.

Marner still has to sign the offersheet...
If anything, Marner is signed or traded before July 1st. I don't think he even gets a chance to get offer-sheeted.

If the Leafs won a round in the playoffs... this conversation doesn't exist. It's amazing what playoff winning fixes.

I dont see any offer sheets happening. It is obvious the league's GMs are in collusion to prevent it from happening.
Signing Nylander to that deal was a huge mistake. Soft wingers like him are readily available for less. Kapanen for example, who did Nylander's job very nicely this year. You could sign a couple of top 4 D for the price they gave Willie.
Nobody is going to offer sheet Marner, because the conditions necessary are too onerous to meet with four 1st rounders AND the $10M in cap space. I could theoretically see a good team that will have late picks for the next 4 years being interested in the idea, but those teams generally dont have $10M on their cap.
A second inside source now. Who needs TSN or Sportsnet anymore?
If any of this is true, you guys really think Shanahan and Dubas would let Marner go because of a rift with the coach? Babcock is on thin ice to begin with, I’m sure Shanahan and Dubas would gladly pack his bags for him if it meant it was the only way to keep Marner.
As for money, he likely will get $10M+ but it cannot be more than Matthews. It’s just the way the league works. Big centres get paid more than small wingers. Unless they do the Toews-Kane model and match Matthews’ contract which is what I expect Marner’s camp to be pushing for.
And one more thing that hasn’t been mentioned in this ridiculous thread. If Marner really does want out of Toronto, kiss all the extra cash he’s making off of commercials goodbye. It seems like every week there is a new product splashing Marner’s face all over it. You think he gets the same treatment outside of Toronto? Think again.
