Because the NHL really shuts down at the end of the first week in August. If they don’t get it done by then everyone is on the lake or the beach and nothing happens until camp opens.

Dennis Bernstein on TSN690 says he thinks the Marner negotiations are going to progress further now because Shanahan stepped in and took a more active role recently. Neither side wants to miss regular season games, thinks he'll be in for game 1.

I live in TO and I saw Marner dunking a donut at Tim Horton's this morning and I asked him if he's done from TO and he said absolutely not and pinky promised. So things don't get any more certain than this.
